Chapter 3: The Family Meeting

By sunrise, Carmen’s confidence had begun to collapse.
Alexander’s lawyer spread documents across my coffee table.
Bank notices.
Debt records.
Company liens.
Messages between Javier and Carmen.
A draft transfer agreement for Sofia’s condo, already prepared before the wedding.
Sofia picked it up with trembling fingers.
“My signature line is already there.”
Her voice was hollow.
Javier looked ashamed for the first time.
“I was going to tell you.”
Sofia looked at him.
“When? Before or after they broke me?”
He had no answer.
Carmen tried one final performance.
“You are turning a wife against her husband.”
Alexander did not even look at her.
“No. You did that.”
Then he nodded to the lawyer.
“Start the annulment.”
Javier’s head snapped up.
“No.”
Sofia whispered, “Yes.”
That one word landed harder than a scream.
Carmen lunged toward her, but Alexander stepped in front of Sofia.
The movement was small.
Enough.
Carmen stopped.
For the first time, she looked afraid.
Alexander leaned closer and spoke so quietly only we heard.
“You touched my daughter once. You will not get close enough to regret it twice.”
The police arrived soon after.
Not because Sofia had called them.
Because Alexander’s lawyer had.
With medical proof.
With audio.
With security footage from the wedding venue.
With text messages showing the plan.
Carmen tried to smile as officers approached her.
“This is a family misunderstanding.”
One officer looked at the photos.
Then at Sofia.
Then at Carmen.
“No, ma’am. It isn’t.”
Javier began crying before they even put handcuffs on Carmen.
That was the final insult.
Not his betrayal.
Not his silence.
His tears.
Because they were not for Sofia.
They were for himself.
As Carmen was led away, she turned to Alexander.
“You think this is over?”
Alexander’s face remained calm.
“No,” he said. “I think this is just the first door closing.”
Then Carmen smiled.
A small, ugly smile.
“You still don’t know what Sofia signed last night.”
Sofia went still.
Alexander’s eyes sharpened.
“What did she sign?”
Carmen was pulled toward the hallway.
Her smile widened.
“Ask your precious daughter what she signed before the ceremony.”
Then she was gone.
May you like
And for the first time that morning...
Alexander looked uncertain.
