Chapter 2: The Man Who Kept Showing Up
Three days later, Olivia found a small package waiting outside her preschool classroom.
Inside sat a brand-new green dinosaur.
Attached was a handwritten note.
Sir Chomps-a-Lot deserves a friend.
—John
No expensive gifts.
No flowers.
No attempts to impress her.
Just a dinosaur.
Noah hugged it before Olivia even removed the tag.
"He remembered."
That simple sentence stayed with her all day.
Their second date happened at a public park.
No fancy restaurant.
No reservations.
Just sandwiches, coffee, and a playground.
John spent nearly an hour pretending to lose races against Noah.
He crawled through tunnels.
Built sandcastles.
Got covered in wood chips.
Olivia watched from a nearby bench.
"You don't have to entertain him."
John smiled.
"I'm not."
"I'm having fun."
For the first time in years, she believed someone.
Weeks became months.
John never rushed.
Never asked to replace Noah's father.
Never tried to buy affection.
He simply appeared.
School concerts.
Soccer practice.
Saturday pancakes.
Emergency grocery runs.
Flat tires.
Flu season.
The ordinary moments that quietly become a life.
Even Noah stopped asking if John was rich.
Instead he asked,
"Is John coming?"
May you like
And somehow...
The answer was almost always yes.
