Chapter 1: The Question That Changed Everything

The restaurant fell silent for exactly three seconds.

Long enough for Olivia Bennett to wish the floor would open beneath her chair.

John Walker was still coughing into his napkin while Noah looked at him with complete sincerity, waiting for an answer.

Olivia covered her face.

"I'm so sorry."

"Noah, we don't ask people if they're rich."

The little boy frowned.

"But Grandma always asked."

The words landed harder than anyone expected.

Olivia's expression stiffened.

For a brief moment, something painful crossed her face before she forced a smile.

"Grandma also says a lot of things we don't repeat."

John finally caught his breath.

Instead of looking offended, he smiled.

"I suppose the answer is... yes."

Noah nodded as though he had confirmed an important scientific theory.

"Okay."

Olivia blinked.

"...Okay?"

"I just wanted to know if you could buy dinosaurs."

John laughed again.

"What kind?"

"The real kind."

John leaned forward.

"I might be a little short on that budget."

Noah accepted the answer immediately.

"That's okay."

He held up Sir Chomps-a-Lot.

"I already have one."

The three of them laughed together.

It felt strangely natural.

Almost dangerous.

Because John realized he hadn't imagined a table for three in years.

Dinner stretched far longer than either of them planned.

Noah demolished two slices of pizza before falling asleep again with his head resting against Olivia's arm.

She brushed his blond hair away from his forehead.

"He always crashes after seven."

John watched the tenderness in her movements.

"You've been doing this alone a long time."

She nodded.

"Four years."

"No help?"

"No."

She answered too quickly.

John didn't push.

Some stories introduced themselves when they were ready.

Others had to be earned.

When the bill arrived, Olivia quietly reached for her purse.

John slid his card across the table first.

"I invited you."

"I ordered soup."

"You also brought the best dinner conversation I've had in years."

She hesitated.

"I don't want charity."

He met her eyes.

"It's not charity."

"It's another first date."

She slowly withdrew her wallet.

Outside, rain still covered the streets of Seattle.

John walked them to Olivia's aging Honda.

Before climbing inside, Noah opened sleepy eyes.

"Bye, Rich John."

Olivia groaned.

"Noah..."

John laughed.

"Goodnight, Buddy."

As they drove away, John stood in the rain much longer than necessary.

Watching the taillights disappear.

Wondering why saying goodbye suddenly felt disappointing.
