Chapter 13 - THE EMPTY DESK

Elaine's office was empty when an internal investigator visited it.

Her phone went straight to voicemail.

The badge system showed her entering the building that morning, but there was no recorded exit.

Maya insisted we avoid speculation.

"Missing from work is not proof of kidnapping," she said.

"We need verified facts."

Daniel agreed and urged Nora to coordinate with the proper authorities.

I tried to focus on practical things.

My mother's furnace had been replaced through a payment plan.

The first installment sat on my credit card next to the tow charge that had started everything.

Tasha was still unemployed.

Owen was attending breathing therapy twice a week.

Curtis continued to draw a salary.

Every injustice seemed to have a different clock.

Late that afternoon, a woman called Maya's office and left a message for me.

"Tell Caleb the ledger is in the place where the cold never stops."

The receptionist recognized Elaine's voice from an earlier call.

It sounded cryptic, but I knew dozens of cold places around Pittsburgh.

Maya asked me not to go chasing clues alone.

I agreed.

Then I remembered a decommissioned cold-storage facility where our technicians kept old service manuals.

Curtis used it for overflow inventory because the rent was cheap.

The site had a freezer room nicknamed the Arctic, even after the compressors were removed.

We gave the address to the investigator.

A team went to inspect the location lawfully while I remained at Maya's office.

Hours passed.

Then Nora called.

"Elaine is alive."

I closed my eyes with relief.

"Where was she?"

"At her sister's house. She left the message because she was frightened her calls were being monitored."

"And the ledger?"

"Stored in a sealed envelope at the facility. The investigator has documented its location and custody."

The envelope contained copies of vendor payments, internal approvals, and handwritten notations that appeared to link fictitious emergency costs to executive bonus targets.

One notation had been underlined twice.

MAKE CRANBERRY THE FINAL ADJUSTMENT.

Below it was a date.

The date of the ice storm.

I read the line three times.

"They were planning the fake loss before I stopped for Daniel."

Nora nodded.

"Your delay wasn't their opportunity. It was their excuse."

My phone vibrated with a new email from Curtis.

Subject: FINAL OFFER.

He offered a settlement large enough to clear my debts and replace my mother's furnace twice over.

The attachment required me to withdraw all allegations and state publicly that my original service records were inaccurate.

A second attachment contained a photograph of me standing outside Maya's office, taken less than an hour earlier.

The message ended with a sentence.
