Chapter 3: Justice on Lily's Fifth Birthday

One year later...

The courthouse was filled beyond capacity.

Every piece of evidence had told the same story.

The security footage.

The fingerprints.

The toxicology report.

Lily's interview.

The internet searches.

The jury needed less than three hours.

The foreperson stood.

"We find the defendants guilty."

My mother closed her eyes.

My father stared at the floor.

Vanessa burst into tears.

None of it changed the verdict.

The judge imposed lengthy prison sentences for attempted murder, aggravated child abuse, kidnapping, conspiracy, and administering a harmful substance to a minor.

As deputies led them away in handcuffs, my mother turned toward me one last time.

"I was your mother."

I looked back without hesitation.

"You stopped being my mother the moment you chose to bury my daughter."

She disappeared through the courtroom doors.

I never saw her again.

Several months later, Marcus and I finally had the wedding we had postponed.

It wasn't held in a mansion.

There were no extravagant decorations.

No elaborate catering.

Only close friends.

Honest laughter.

And one little girl wearing a bright yellow dress.

When the officiant asked if anyone had something to say before the ceremony ended, Lily raised her tiny hand.

Everyone smiled.

She looked at Marcus.

"Can I call you Dad now?"

Marcus dropped to one knee.

His eyes filled with tears.

"I've been waiting for that."

Lily wrapped her arms around his neck.

The guests stood and applauded.

That evening, we celebrated Lily's fifth birthday with a homemade cake covered in uneven frosting and five crooked candles.

She closed her eyes.

Made her wish.

Then opened them with the biggest smile I'd ever seen.

For the first time in her life...

She celebrated a birthday surrounded not by people connected through blood—

But by people who had chosen to love her.

And I finally understood something my parents never did.
