Chapter 2: Lily Finally Speaks
Lily remained unconscious for nearly fourteen hours.
Marcus never left the hospital.
Neither did I.
Late that evening, the intensive care doctor finally smiled.
"She's waking up."
I rushed to her bedside.
Her tiny fingers squeezed mine.
"Mama..."
"I'm here, sweetheart."
She blinked slowly.
"Grandma said..."
Her voice was barely audible.
"...we were playing birthday hide-and-seek."
Tears streamed down my face.
"What happened after that?"
Lily frowned as if trying to remember.
"Aunt Vanessa gave me juice."
"It tasted funny."
"I got sleepy."
Then she whispered words that froze every adult in the room.
"Grandpa said..."
"...if I stayed quiet forever..."
"...Emma could finally be the only princess."
The nurse immediately called the detective assigned to our case.
Lily repeated everything during a child forensic interview the following morning.
She described being carried outside.
She remembered hearing the dumpster lid slam shut.
She remembered crying for me.
Then everything became dark.
The toxicology report arrived that afternoon.
A powerful prescription sedative had been found in her bloodstream.
Enough to make a four-year-old lose consciousness.
The investigation moved from child abuse...
To attempted murder.
Search warrants followed.
Detectives found crushed sedative tablets hidden inside Vanessa's purse.
They recovered internet searches on my mother's laptop:
"How long can someone survive inside a dumpster?"
"Will sleeping medicine appear during an autopsy?"

No one could explain those searches.
Because there was no innocent explanation.
