The church remained frozen.
No one spoke.
No one even dared to breathe.
Mariana slowly accepted the leather folder from the attorney, her fingers still trembling from everything that had happened only moments before.
She had walked into the church believing she was about to become someone's wife.

The attorney offered a respectful nod.
"Your father prepared these documents fifteen years ago."
Mariana frowned.
"My father died when I was twelve."
"He did," the attorney replied. "But he anticipated this day."
Every guest leaned forward.
Even the priest remained silent.
Adrián suddenly stepped toward them.
"This has to be some mistake."
The attorney looked directly at him.
"There is no mistake."
He opened the folder to its final page.
A notarized statement appeared beneath the company seal.
The attorney began reading aloud.
"If my daughter is ever publicly rejected, humiliated, or exploited because of my family's absence or supposed poverty, every business contract involving the Salazar family shall be terminated immediately."
A gasp swept through the church.
Adrián's face turned white.
His father, seated in the front row, jumped to his feet.

The attorney continued.
"The Salazar family has depended on Calder Holdings for nearly twenty years."
Another page followed.
"All outstanding loans become immediately payable."
"Every supply agreement is canceled."
"Every partnership is dissolved."
The guests exchanged stunned looks.
The groom's father staggered backward.
"This... this can't happen."
The attorney closed the folder calmly.
"It already has."
Mariana stared at the documents.
Her father hadn't simply left her an inheritance.
He had protected her long before she even understood she would need protecting.
