Chapter 19 - WHAT CELESTE KNEW BEFORE SHE SAID SHE KNEW

Celeste cried when Vega showed her the floral-change email.

I watched through the one-way glass from an observation room.

Her attorney asked for a private break.

Vega said no until Celeste answered one question.

"Did you send this request?"

Celeste stared at the printout.

"Yes."

"Why?"

Silence.

"You told us you learned Sophie would be involved during cocktail hour."

Celeste covered her face.

"That was not true."

My stomach tightened.

I had expected it.

It still hurt.

"When did you know?"

"Wednesday."

Two days before the wedding.

"How much did you know?"

"That Preston wanted a confrontation at Evelyn's table."

"Did you know a phone would be planted on Sophie?"

Celeste cried harder.

"Yes."

I looked away from the glass.

Julia stood beside me.

"You don't have to watch."

"I do."

I needed to see every adult who had known my daughter was walking into a trap.

I needed their faces stored somewhere inside me where excuses could never rewrite them later.

Vega continued.

"Why did you help alter the flowers?"

"Preston said he needed the cameras not to show Evelyn clearly."

"Why?"

"He said she would cause a scene and then claim she hadn't."

"Did that make sense to you?"

"At the time, I wanted the wedding to happen."

There it was.

The ugliest motive in the most ordinary words.

I wanted the wedding to happen.

A child could be humiliated because the centerpieces were paid for.

The dress had been fitted.

The guests had arrived.

The dream mattered more than the girl.

"Did you know about the camera outage?"

"No."

"Did you know about the CPS plan?"

"No."

"The forged financial records?"

"I knew there were documents about Evelyn."

"Did you know they were forged?"

"Preston said they were evidence of things she had done."

"Did you believe him?"

Celeste hesitated.

"At first."

"When did you stop?"

"When he told me to make the floral change."

"Why?"

"Because if the evidence against Evelyn was real, he wouldn't need to control the cameras."

That was the point at which Celeste had understood.

And she still continued.

"Why didn't you warn Evelyn?"

"Preston had the information about Lauren."

"The charity theft."

"Yes."

"So you protected your sister by sacrificing someone else's child."

Celeste flinched.

"Yes."

I closed my eyes.

At least she said it without decoration.

"What did you tell the photographer?"

"I asked her to keep pictures if Preston went near Sophie's chair."

"Why?"

"Because I was scared something would happen."

"But you did not warn the child's mother."

"No."

"Did Preston know you warned Natalie?"

"No."

"What did you think would happen?"

"I thought he would accuse Sophie."

"And then?"

"Evelyn would leave."

"And Monday?"

Celeste looked up.

"Preston would get the company."

The statement was clean.

The wedding framing and the corporate plan were joined in one sentence.

Vega asked about the oak board.

Celeste shook her head.

"I never knew he would touch Sophie."

"Did Preston have a history of violence?"

Her silence changed the room.

"Ms. Vale?"

"Yes."

My heart began pounding.

"Against whom?"

"Me."

I stared through the glass.

Celeste's attorney whispered urgently.

She shook her head.

"I am done hiding it."

She lifted her sleeve.

A faint yellow bruise remained near her upper arm.

"That was from last week."

Vega's expression stayed controlled.

"What happened?"

"I told him I wanted to postpone the wedding."

"Why?"

"Because I found messages about PBR."

"What did he do?"

"He grabbed me."

"Anything else?"

"He shoved me into a closet door."

"Did you report it?"

"No."

"Why?"

"He apologized."

The oldest sentence in too many stories.

"Any other incidents?"

"Two."

"Details?"

Celeste described a broken phone and a slammed door that caught her hand.

Then she said something that made me sit forward.

"He practiced the confrontation."

Vega stopped writing.

"What?"

"Thursday night."

"Explain."

"He stood in our hotel suite and pretended to find the phone."

My skin went cold.

"What did he say?"

"He practiced lines."

"Which lines?"

Celeste swallowed.

"He said, 'That's what happens when you raise a thief.'"

The exact words he shouted after hitting Sophie.

He had rehearsed them the night before.

"Was the line supposed to come before the assault?"

"There was not supposed to be an assault."

"Then when was he supposed to say it?"

"After he found the phone."

"Did he practice anything physical?"

"He knocked over a chair."

"Why?"

"He said he needed Evelyn to look like she caused chaos."

"Did he mention the menu board?"

Celeste thought.

"He noticed it at rehearsal dinner setup."

"What did he say?"

"He joked that it was heavy enough to knock someone out."

I stopped breathing.

Julia put a hand on my shoulder.

Inside the interview room, Vega's voice changed.

"Exact words."

"He touched the board and said, 'Jesus, this thing could knock someone out.'"

"Who was present?"

"Me."

"Anyone else?"

"The wedding planner."

"Name?"

"Denise Abbott."

Another witness.

Another piece.

"Did he say anything after the assault?"

Celeste looked down.

"In the bridal suite."

"What?"

"He came upstairs while police were in the ballroom."

"Why?"

"To get his passport."

"What did he say?"

Celeste's voice became almost inaudible.

"I asked him how he could hit a child."

"And?"

"He said he wasn't aiming for her head."

My stomach turned.

"What was he aiming for?"

Celeste looked toward the glass without being able to see me.

"He said he was aiming for Evelyn's shoulder."

I felt Julia's hand tighten.

The board had not slipped.

The swing had not been random.

Even Preston's private explanation admitted intent to strike someone.

"Then why did it hit Sophie?"

"He said she stepped sideways."

She moved.

The text to Lucas.

Now the words made complete sense.

Preston had swung the board intending to hit me.

Sophie moved into the path while clinging to me.

He blamed her for being struck.

Then Celeste added one final detail.

"There is a recording."

Vega looked up.

"Of what?"

"The hotel suite after the assault."

"How?"

"I started a voice memo when he came in."

"Where is it?"

"My phone."

"We have your phone."

"Hidden folder."

"Passcode?"

Celeste gave it.

Vega left the room immediately.

Twenty minutes later, she returned to us.

"We found it."

"What does he say?"

She did not play the whole file.

She played eleven seconds.

Celeste's voice came first.

"You hit an eight-year-old child."

Then Preston.

Cold.

Annoyed.

Unapologetic.

"I was aiming at Evelyn."

A pause.

May you like

"The kid moved."

Those five words destroyed his accident story more completely than any lawyer ever could.
