Chapter 12 - DANIEL CROSS COMES OUT OF HIDING

Daniel called me at 11:06 that night.

No caller ID.

No greeting.

Just breathing.

I almost hung up.

Then he said my name.

"Evelyn."

I stood from the couch so quickly Rachel looked over.

"Daniel?"

"Are you alone?"

"No."

"Who is with you?"

"Rachel."

"Anyone else?"

"Sophie is upstairs."

"Police?"

I hesitated.

"No."

"Do not call them yet."

Every warning Vega had given me flashed through my mind.

Do not meet witnesses alone.

Do not interfere.

Preserve communications.

"Where are you?"

"Safe enough."

"That is not an answer."

"It is the only one I can give you."

His voice sounded exhausted.

Not frightened exactly.

More like a man who had finally reached the end of pretending he was not frightened.

"Why were you in the bridal suite?"

Silence.

"I saw the photograph."

"Then you know I was there."

"Were you helping them frame Sophie?"

"No."

The answer came instantly.

"Then what were you doing?"

"Trying to learn how far Richard was willing to go."

"You knew about the plan."

"Part of it."

My hand tightened around the phone.

"How much?"

"I knew he wanted to create a misconduct issue around you before Monday."

"Did you know he would use Sophie?"

Daniel did not answer fast enough.

"Daniel."

"I learned at the wedding."

Rage moved through me.

"Before the phone was planted?"

"Yes."

"And you did nothing."

"I tried."

"You did nothing."

"Evelyn, listen to me."

"My daughter has six stitches."

"I know."

"Do not tell me to listen."

Rachel moved closer.

I put the call on speaker and held up a finger for silence.

Daniel continued.

"I went into the bridal suite because Richard told me he had documents he needed me to authenticate."

"Forged documents with my signature?"

"Yes."

The admission landed hard.

"You knew they were forged."

"The moment I saw them."

"Then why didn't you call me?"

"Because Richard was watching me."

"You had a phone."

"My phone was cloned three weeks ago."

"What?"

"I found remote-access software on it."

Rachel's eyes widened.

"Who installed it?"

"I don't know."

"Preston?"

"Maybe Lucas."

"So you disappeared."

"After the wedding began."

"Why not before?"

"Because I needed the final proof."

I nearly laughed.

"Everyone keeps needing one more piece of proof while my daughter pays for it."

Daniel's voice broke.

"I am sorry."

"That does not help her."

"No."

"Tell me what happened in the bridal suite."

He took a breath.

"Richard showed Preston the emergency petition."

"I know."

"Then he showed him the financial exhibits."

"The forged transfers."

"Yes."

"You authenticated them?"

"No."

"What did you say?"

"I told him the signatures were false and that I would not support the filing."

"What did my father say?"

Daniel was quiet.

"He said I had already supported it."

A chill went through me.

"Meaning?"

"My electronic certification was attached to the exhibits."

"Forged too?"

"Stolen credentials."

"By who?"

"Preston had access to the executive system through his assistant."

Terminal seventeen.

The fake emails.

The false approvals.

Everything converged.

"What did you do?"

"I told Richard I was going to the board."

"And?"

"He reminded me about the insurance policy."

I felt cold.

"He threatened you?"

"Not directly."

"What did he say?"

"He said, 'It would be tragic if your wife had to learn what twenty million dollars feels like without you.'"

Rachel covered her mouth.

My father had said it like a business observation.

That made it worse.

"Where is your wife?"

"With her sister in Arizona."

"Does Richard know?"

"I hope not."

"Why did you send me the spreadsheet?"

"Because once Preston hit Sophie, I knew the plan had become something none of them could contain."

"You waited until then?"

"I had scheduled the email earlier."

"It was modified today."

Silence.

"Daniel?"

"I updated it from a remote laptop."

"The metadata says OWENM."

"Owen Matthews."

"Who is that?"

"A former company auditor."

"Where is he?"

"Dead."

The word dropped into the room.

"What?"

"He died last year."

"Then why use his account?"

"Because Richard forgot it still existed."

I sat down slowly.

"How long have you known about the transfers?"

"Fourteen months."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"I did not know which side you were on."

That hurt, even though I understood it.

"You thought I was part of it."

"Your name was on the approvals."

"You knew the signatures were wrong."

"Not at first."

"And later?"

"Later I realized someone was using you as a shield."

"My father."

"And Preston."

"What is PBR Holdings?"

Daniel exhaled.

"Preston Beaumont Richard."

I blinked.

"Those are his names."

"Preston Beaumont Richard Whitmore."

"So he owns it."

"Indirectly."

"How much has he taken?"

"More than the spreadsheet shows."

"How much?"

"At least one hundred thirty million."

Rachel whispered something I could not hear.

"Why?"

"Debt."

"Gambling?"

"Investments."

"What kind?"

"Bad ones."

"And my father covered them."

"At first."

"Then?"

"Then Preston realized he could make money from the cover-up itself."

The merger.

Transfer valuable hotel assets into a company he controlled.

Hide old losses inside new valuations.

Make himself richer while burying the theft.

"And Monday's vote would complete it."

"Yes."

"Why did my father agree?"

Daniel laughed once, bitterly.

"Because Richard would rather burn the company than admit the golden boy failed."

The sentence hit me with brutal familiarity.

My father had spent his life protecting Preston from small consequences.

Now he was protecting him from a hundred-million-dollar disaster.

The scale had changed.

The instinct had not.

"I need you to talk to Detective Vega."

"I will."

"When?"

"Tomorrow."

"No."

"Evelyn."

"Tonight."

"I need to move first."

"From where?"

"I can't tell you."

"Daniel, people are looking for you."

"I know."

"Police think you may be in danger."

"I am in danger."

His voice changed.

He was looking at something.

"What?"

"Nothing."

"What happened?"

"Someone just pulled into the lot."

I stood again.

"What lot?"

"I have to go."

"Daniel, tell me where you are."

"If I don't call by midnight, give Vega the phrase Blue Ledger."

"What does that mean?"

"She'll need to search the old Palmer Street archive."

"Daniel."

"Tell Sophie I'm sorry."

"Do not hang up."

The line went dead.

I called Vega immediately.

She did not waste time asking why I had spoken to him.

She asked for the number.

I gave it.

She asked for the exact words.

I repeated them.

Blue Ledger.

Palmer Street archive.

Police started tracing the call.

At 11:23, they got a location.

A motel near Joliet.

At 11:41, officers reached the parking lot.

Daniel's rented car was there.

His room door was open.

The lights were on.

His laptop lay broken on the floor.

Daniel was gone.

But on the bathroom mirror, someone had written two letters in black marker.

May you like

PW.

Preston Whitmore.
