PART 2 — The Truth About Beatrice

Grace stared at her son as though she had never seen him before.

"Who is Beatrice?"

Caleb laughed once.

It wasn't amusement.

It was the bitter laugh of someone who had lived inside a lie for too long.

"You really don't remember her?"

Grace frowned.

"No."

Caleb slowly stood, his wedding shirt hanging open.

"Because nobody wanted to remember her."

He walked toward the window, staring into the darkness beyond the garden where the wedding lights still glowed.

"Beatrice Walsh."

"My fiancée."

The room froze.

Robert looked at his wife in disbelief.

"You were engaged before Katherine?"

Caleb nodded.

"Three years ago."

"We had already picked a house."

"We were planning our wedding."

Grace whispered,

"You told us she moved overseas."

"I lied."

His voice cracked.

"She died."

Silence swallowed the room.

Caleb closed his eyes.

"She worked with Katherine."

"They were both junior engineers at Harrison Infrastructure."

"They competed for the same promotion."

Grace felt a knot tighten inside her stomach.

"What happened?"

Caleb pulled a worn envelope from the bedside drawer.

Inside were newspaper clippings.

One headline read:

ENGINEER KILLED AFTER SAFETY REPORT IGNORED.

Another carried Beatrice's smiling photograph.

Grace's hands began shaking.

Caleb continued quietly.

"Beatrice discovered serious structural defects on one of the company's bridge projects."

"She wanted construction stopped."

"But someone leaked confidential documents."

"The company accused her of misconduct."

"She lost her job."

"No one believed her."

"Two weeks later..."

"...she drove off the Riverside Bridge."

Grace could barely breathe.

"You think Katherine caused that?"

"I know she did."

He pulled out printed emails.

Anonymous complaints.

Performance reports.

Messages that appeared to show Katherine reporting Beatrice to management.

"Everything pointed to her."

"So I met Katherine."

"I dated her."

"I made her fall in love with me."

"I waited two years..."

"...for tonight."

Grace felt sick.

"You married her... just to destroy her?"

Caleb lowered his head.

"Yes."

"But..."

He looked toward the hallway where Katherine had disappeared.

"...something happened tonight that I never expected."
