Chapter 18 - THE ROOF ABOVE THE RIVER

Before I stepped into the open lot, Rachel grabbed my coat.

"You are not trained for hostage negotiation."

"Neither is Lorenzo."

"That does not make this equal."

"He called me."

"Because he knows you are emotionally compromised."

The phrase irritated me because it sounded clinical and because it was true.

"Then use that."

Rachel stared at me.

"Explain."

"He expects me to behave emotionally."

"You are behaving emotionally."

"I know."

I took a breath.

"But now I know he expects it."

That difference gave us a narrow advantage.

Rachel's tactical commander outlined what they needed.

Keep Lorenzo talking.

Keep his weapon off Serena if possible.

Move him away from the roof edge.

Do not promise transportation we could not safely provide.

Do not provoke unless the sniper confirmed angle.

I listened.

Actually listened.

The commander noticed.

"You done this before?"

"No."

"Then why are you not arguing?"

"Long night."

Clara's voice came through Rachel's phone from the federal office.

"Because he has finally discovered other people can know things."

I looked at the device.

"I can hear you."

"Good."

Rachel put the call on speaker.

Clara asked the tactical commander what she should watch for on the roof feed.

He explained body position, balance, and weapon orientation.

She absorbed it quickly.

Then she said, "Lorenzo favors his right leg."

"How do you know?" Rachel asked.

"Security footage from the diner."

She had noticed him limping slightly.

The commander adjusted the sniper recommendation.

A shot to the right shoulder would likely turn his weight away from Serena instead of toward the edge.

I stared at the phone.

Even from miles away, injured and exhausted, Clara was still improving everyone's odds.

"Anything else?" the commander asked.

Clara answered, "He reacts badly to being called weak."

I smiled without humor.

"Most men in our world do."

"Yes."

Her voice softened.

"Including you."

"Working on it."

Rachel ended the strategy call.

"Ready?"

No.

I said, "Yes."

Before leaving the vehicle, I removed my watch.

My father had given it to me when I turned sixteen.

I handed it to Rachel.

"If this goes badly-"

"It will not."

"That is not how planning works."

She raised an eyebrow.

I almost laughed at the fact I was borrowing Clara's logic now.

"Give it to her."

Rachel took the watch.

"You can give it to her yourself when you come back."

I stepped into the snow and looked up at Serena on the roof.

For the first time, I was not walking toward danger to prove fearlessness.

I was walking toward it because there was a specific job only I could perform.

That distinction kept me alive.

Everyone in the command vehicle froze.

Through the windshield, the roofline cut across the black sky.

Serena stood at the edge with her hands tied behind her.

Snow caught in her blonde hair.

Lorenzo's gun pressed into the middle of her back.

My phone remained against my ear.

"Tell them to leave," he said.

Rachel Kim watched me.

Her tactical commander shook his head once.

No withdrawal.

I spoke carefully.

"If I tell them to leave, you still have nothing."

"I have Serena."

"You have a woman you were already willing to sacrifice."

A pause.

Serena heard me.

Even from the ground, I saw her shoulders stiffen.

I hated the words.

I needed Lorenzo to believe them.

"You sound cold, Dominic."

"I learned from family."

"Then maybe you finally understand why Carlo lasted so long."

"Carlo is in custody."

"For tonight."

"Forever if he is lucky."

Lorenzo laughed.

"And what do you think happens to you?"

"Whatever I earned."

The answer silenced him.

It almost silenced me too.

A year earlier, I would never have said it.

I would have believed consequences were weakness.

Now I looked at Serena on the roof and understood that the entire disaster had grown from men who spent their lives refusing to pay for anything they did.

"You do not mean that," Lorenzo said.

"You do not know me anymore."

"I know exactly who you are."

"Then prove it."

I stepped out of the command vehicle before Rachel could stop me.

Agents shouted.

I kept walking into the open lot.

No weapon.

Hands visible.

Snow landed on my coat.

Lorenzo leaned over the roof edge.

"There he is."

"You wanted me."

I lowered the phone and shouted upward.

"Let her go."

"Tell the agents to leave."

"No."

His face tightened.

"You think I will not do it?"

"I think you will."

Serena turned her head slightly.

I could barely hear her.

"Dom, do not."

Lorenzo jerked her backward.

"Quiet."

I kept walking until Rachel's team leader caught my sleeve.

"That is far enough."

Lorenzo saw him.

"Back away!"

The agent released me and retreated.

I stood alone in the lot.

"What now?" I shouted.

Lorenzo smiled.

"Now you come up."

Rachel swore behind me.

My earpiece crackled.

"Absolutely not."

I whispered without moving my lips.

"Can you get a shot?"

"Wind. Bad angle. Serena is too close."

"Other roof access?"

"Team moving."

I looked up.

"Fine. I am coming."

Lorenzo laughed.

"I knew you would."

Of course he did.

That was why I went.

Not because I thought I could overpower him.

Because every second he focused on me was a second Rachel's team could move.

I entered the building.

The first floor smelled like rust and refrigeration oil.

Agents had cleared most of it.

Two Moretti men lay handcuffed near the loading docks.

A third was receiving medical treatment.

I took the stairwell alone because Lorenzo demanded it.

Rachel's people shadowed one floor below.

At the sixth-floor landing, my phone buzzed.

Clara.

I answered.

"You are going up there."

Not a question.

"Yes."

"Rachel told me."

"I guessed."

Silence.

Then Clara said, "Do not make this about redemption."

I stopped on the stairs.

"What?"

"You do not get to erase what you did by doing one brave thing."

The words hurt.

They also steadied me.

"I know."

"Good."

"I am doing it because Serena is up there."

"Good."

"And because Lorenzo is watching me instead of the tactical team."

"Better."

I almost smiled.

"Clara."

"What?"

There were a thousand things I wanted to say.

I love you.

Forgive me.

Wait for me.

None of them were fair to ask from her in that moment.

"Thank you for calling."

She was quiet.

"Come back alive."

The line ended.

I climbed.

The roof door stood open.

Wind hit me immediately.

Serena stood twenty feet away.

Lorenzo held her by the back of her coat.

Her face was pale from blood loss.

The bandage on her shoulder had soaked through.

"You look terrible," I said.

Serena laughed weakly.

"You always knew how to flatter a woman."

Lorenzo shoved her.

"Enough."

I stopped ten feet away.

"Where is Evelyn?"

"Safe downstairs."

I knew federal agents had already found her in an office.

I did not tell him.

"What do you want from me now?"

"A car."

"No."

"A route out."

"No."

"Then she dies."

"And then you still do not have a car."

His face tightened.

"You used to be smarter than this."

"I used to confuse fear with leverage."

He pressed the gun harder into Serena's back.

She winced.

"Looks like leverage to me."

I looked at Serena.

Her eyes moved toward the roof access structure behind Lorenzo.

A shadow shifted there.

Team in position.

I needed him to turn.

"Lorenzo."

"What?"

"Carlo told me you begged him for permission to move against me."

His face changed instantly.

Pride.

Exactly as predictable as mine had once been.

"Carlo lied."

"He said you were never strong enough to act alone."

"Shut up."

"He called you a useful dog."

Lorenzo stepped away from Serena by half a foot.

"He needed me."

"He used you."

"I said shut up."

He swung the gun toward me.

That was the opening.

Serena dropped flat.

A suppressed shot cracked from behind the roof structure.

The bullet struck Lorenzo's shoulder.

His gun flew sideways.

I ran forward.

He hit me with his good arm.

We crashed onto the icy roof.

Lorenzo clawed for the weapon.

Serena kicked it away.

He turned on her.

I grabbed him around the waist.

We slammed into the safety barrier at the edge.

Metal groaned.

For one terrible second, both of us leaned over empty air.

Lorenzo looked down.

Then at me.

"Do it."

The same words Carlo had used.

Push me.

Become me.

Finish it the old way.

I pulled him backward instead.

He looked confused.

That confusion was the last victory I needed.

Agents swarmed us.

They forced Lorenzo face-down and cuffed him.

Serena sat in the snow, breathing hard.

A medic ran toward her.

She looked at me.

"You called me a sacrifice."

"I was lying."

"Still rude."

"You will survive."

"Apparently just to stay angry at you."

"Get in line."

She almost smiled.

Then her face changed.

"Dominic."

"What?"

"Carlo was not the one who authorized the payment for the crash."

I went still.

"What are you talking about?"

"I saw the transfer order before everything happened."

"You told me Lorenzo moved early."

"He did."

"Then who paid him?"

Serena looked toward the agents holding Lorenzo.

"Someone used your authorization code."

My stomach dropped.

"Impossible."

"Clara thought so too."

The roof seemed to tilt beneath me.

If my code had been used, the final betrayal had not belonged only to Carlo.

Someone had wanted the crash to look like an order from me.

Someone had been planning for Clara to die and for me to take the blame.

May you like

And that person was still free.
