Chapter 14 - THE PRICE OF A MOTHER

Rachel watched the hostage video twice before allowing anyone to speak.

The second time, she paused on every frame.

"Window reflection," she said.

Mateo leaned closer.

A narrow strip of glass behind Evelyn reflected stacked pallets and a yellow crane hook.

"Industrial property," he said.

"Very observant," Rachel answered dryly.

"I try."

Serena ignored them.

She was studying her mother's face.

"She is wearing the same earrings from Sunday."

Clara looked at her.

"Meaning?"

"She was taken before tonight."

We all went still.

Serena touched the screen.

"My mother changes jewelry every day. She is obsessive about it."

"When did you last speak to her?" Rachel asked.

"Three days ago."

"Video call?"

"No. Voice only."

Serena's face collapsed slowly.

"That was not her phone."

Clara understood.

"Carlo has had Evelyn for days."

"Which means Serena's mother's disappearance was part of the operation before Clara's crash," Mateo said.

Rachel nodded.

The timeline became darker.

Carlo had prepared leverage against Serena before Lorenzo hit Clara's car.

He had expected Serena might defect.

He had expected Clara might survive long enough to talk.

He had contingency plans for everybody.

I looked at Clara.

"How long did you suspect Evelyn was being used?"

"I did not know she had been taken."

"But you knew Carlo threatened her."

"Serena told me after I confronted her."

Serena closed her eyes.

"I should have moved Mom then."

Clara shook her head.

"Carlo would have noticed."

"So we did nothing."

"No."

Clara's voice sharpened.

"We gathered evidence."

Serena looked at her.

"And look where that got everyone."

The room became tense.

I expected Clara to snap back.

She did not.

"You are angry because you are scared."

Serena laughed bitterly.

"Do not analyze me."

"Fine."

Clara leaned back in the wheelchair.

"Then be angry."

That response surprised Serena enough to quiet her.

Clara continued.

"But do not waste time turning fear into blame. We have plenty of people who actually earned it."

Serena looked down.

"I am sorry."

Clara nodded once.

No performance.

No instant friendship.

Just acknowledgment.

I watched the two women I had placed in opposition to each other for a year solve conflict better in thirty seconds than I had in my entire marriage.

Rachel caught me watching.

"Something funny?"

"No."

"Good."

She pointed at the hostage video.

"We need location confirmation."

Mateo cross-referenced the yellow crane hook against property photographs tied to Carlo's companies.

Three possibilities.

One was McKinley.

The second had been demolished.

The third belonged to a shipping company under federal receivership.

That narrowed it enough.

Serena insisted on going.

I objected.

Clara objected to my objection.

Rachel objected to everyone.

For five minutes, the room became louder than the gunfight at Northwestern.

Finally Judge Hayes spoke.

"Serena decides."

Silence.

He looked at me first.

Then Rachel.

Then his daughter.

"People have been deciding her life for too long."

Serena stared at him.

The statement did not repair anything.

But it mattered.

She chose to go.

That was how the hostage plan began.

Serena did not cry when she saw the video.

That frightened me more than tears would have.

Her mother, Evelyn Hayes, sat tied to a wooden chair in what looked like a warehouse office.

A strip of gray tape covered her mouth.

A digital clock on the wall showed 5:41 a.m.

Carlo's voice came from behind the camera.

"Serena, you have ninety minutes."

The camera moved closer to Evelyn.

"Bring the original cassette and Judge Hayes."

Serena's father flinched beside her.

"No."

Carlo continued.

"If Dominic comes, she dies."

The video ended.

Serena stared at the black screen.

"Where is she?"

Mateo had returned to the vault after losing Carlo in the stairwell.

He examined the frame.

"Could be any warehouse in Chicago."

"He said ninety minutes."

"Which means he expects us to find it."

Clara spoke from the bench.

"The clock."

We looked at her.

"Zoom in."

Mateo enlarged the image.

The clock was mounted beneath a faded company logo.

Most of it was hidden behind Evelyn's head.

Only three letters were visible.

MCK.

Serena inhaled sharply.

"McKinley."

The warehouse Bennett mentioned.

Mateo nodded.

"Carlo wants us there."

"Obviously," I said.

Clara looked at me.

"Which means we do not go the way he expects."

Federal agents entered the floor behind us.

Rachel Kim came first.

She was smaller than I expected.

Dark suit.

No visible fear.

Two agents flanked her.

She looked at Judge Hayes.

Then at Clara.

Then at me.

"Dominic Valente."

"Rachel Kim."

"I have wanted to speak with you for years."

"Take a number."

Clara gave me a look.

I stopped.

Rachel almost smiled.

"Mrs. Valente told me you might be difficult."

"Mrs. Valente tells the truth."

Clara's expression changed slightly.

I pretended not to notice.

Rachel turned to Serena.

"We can help your mother."

Serena shook her head.

"Carlo sees police, she dies."

"Carlo already plans to kill her if it benefits him."

The words were harsh.

They were also true.

Serena looked at me.

For once, she did not ask me to fix it.

"What do we do?"

I looked at Rachel.

"Do you have tactical teams?"

"Yes."

"Can they approach McKinley without being seen?"

"Maybe."

Clara shook her head.

"Not enough."

Everyone looked at her.

She pointed toward the cassette tape still lying inside the bank box.

Carlo had stolen the metal evidence container but not the tape.

He had assumed it was inside.

"He thinks we have one original," Clara said.

"We give him one."

Rachel understood first.

"Duplicate."

"No."

Clara looked at the old cassette.

"We give him the real tape."

I stared at her.

"Absolutely not."

Her eyes hardened.

"You said you were learning."

"Learning does not mean handing over the only recording of my father's killer."

"It is not the only recording."

Of course.

Harold had copied it.

She had planned that too.

Clara continued.

"Carlo believes physical objects matter because that is how he has controlled evidence his whole life."

Rachel nodded.

"We can digitize it before the exchange."

"Already done," Clara said.

She tapped her phone.

"Three encrypted copies."

I looked at her.

"When?"

"While you were arguing with Harold."

Mateo coughed to hide a laugh.

I ignored him.

"Fine."

Clara leaned back, exhausted.

"Serena takes the tape."

"No," I said immediately.

Serena said, "Yes."

I looked at her.

"Carlo asked for you."

"He asked for me and my father."

Judge Hayes shook his head.

"I will go."

Serena turned on him.

"You can barely stand."

"I owe you this."

"You owe me thirty years."

Her voice broke.

"Do not pay with the last hour you have left."

He looked down.

Rachel stepped closer.

"We can use a decoy for Judge Hayes."

"Carlo will know," Serena said.

"Maybe."

"Then my mother dies."

I looked at Mateo.

"Bennett."

"What about him?"

"He was supposed to take Serena to McKinley."

Mateo understood.

"We make Carlo think his man succeeded."

Rachel frowned.

"Where is Bennett?"

Mateo told her.

She sent two agents immediately.

The plan came together fast.

Too fast.

Those were the plans I trusted least.

Serena would arrive in Bennett's vehicle with the tape and a sedated figure in the back seat dressed to look like Judge Hayes.

Rachel's tactical team would stage outside the likely surveillance perimeter.

Mateo would approach through a freight tunnel connected to an abandoned packaging plant next door.

I would stay with Clara.

That was Rachel's instruction.

It was also Clara's.

I hated it.

"I should be there."

Clara looked at me from the wheelchair Amelia had finally forced her into.

"Why?"

"Because Carlo wants me hurt."

"That is not an argument for attending."

"Because Serena might need backup."

"She will have Mateo and federal agents."

"Because I need to finish this."

Clara studied me.

"There it is."

"What?"

"Need."

She spoke quietly.

"You still think closure belongs to whoever can dominate the last scene."

The words irritated me because they were accurate.

"My father was murdered."

"I know."

"Carlo did it."

"I know."

"And you want me to sit in a room while someone else takes him?"

"I want you to choose not to make everything worse because your pride is bleeding."

Rachel looked away politely.

Mateo did not bother.

I lowered my voice.

"If I stay, it is because you asked me to."

Clara shook her head.

"No."

"No?"

"If you stay, it has to be because you understand why."

That was harder.

I looked at Serena preparing to walk into a hostage exchange.

I looked at Judge Hayes trembling beside her.

I looked at federal agents building a lawful arrest instead of a revenge killing.

Then I looked at Clara.

"If I go, Carlo gets the reaction he expects."

She said nothing.

"He knows how I move when I am angry."

Still nothing.

"If I stay, he has to deal with people he cannot predict."

Clara nodded once.

"Good."

I hated how much that one word mattered.

Serena took the cassette.

Before she left, she stopped in front of Clara.

"If I do not come back-"

"You are coming back."

"Clara."

"No speeches."

Serena's eyes filled.

"Why did you help me?"

Clara looked at her for a long moment.

"Because being used does not excuse what you did."

Serena flinched.

"But it also does not mean you have to keep letting them use you."

Serena nodded.

Then she turned to me.

There was a year of lies between us.

There was also something like goodbye.

"Dom."

"Bring your mother home."

She left.

Forty-three minutes later, Mateo called.

His whisper came through my earpiece.

"Serena is inside."

"Visual on Evelyn?"

"Yes."

"Carlo?"

"Not yet."

I looked at Clara.

She watched me from the hospital chair Rachel had moved into a secure office across from the courthouse.

Mateo continued.

"Wait."

A pause.

"Something is wrong."

My body tightened.

"What?"

"Carlo is not here."

Clara's phone buzzed.

She looked at the screen.

Her face went white.

"Dominic."

She turned the phone toward me.

A live video showed Amelia Grant walking toward her apartment door.

Carlo stood behind her with a gun.

He looked directly into the camera.

May you like

"You keep chasing the wrong hostage."
