Chapter 14 - He Put His Hands on Me Again

For one second, I stopped being the woman who had survived him.

I became the woman at the cliff again.

His hand was on my body.

His breath was beside my ear.

And my son was between us.

Then Noah cried.

That sound brought me back.

I drove my elbow backward as hard as I could.

Michael grunted.

His grip loosened.

I turned and shoved Noah toward the nearest security officer.

"Take him!"

The officer caught the baby against his vest and moved behind the concrete wall.

Michael grabbed my coat.

I let the coat slide off my shoulders.

For the first time in our marriage, I used everything he had taught me about his need for control against him.

He expected me to freeze.

I ran.

Not far.

My body was still healing.

But far enough.

Luke came around the upper landing just as Michael reached for me again.

He hit Michael shoulder-first and drove him into the wall.

Michael swung wildly.

Luke blocked the first strike.

The second caught Luke near his injured arm.

He staggered.

Michael pulled a small knife from his jacket.

Everything slowed.

I saw the blade.

I saw Luke off balance.

I saw Noah in the arms of the officer behind me.

Then a security guard shouted.

"Drop it!"

Michael looked toward the guard.

That was enough.

Luke seized his wrist and slammed it against the concrete rail.

The knife fell.

Two officers tackled Michael to the landing.

His face struck the floor.

For the first time since the mountain, I saw my husband physically unable to control what happened next.

His hands were pulled behind him.

Steel cuffs closed around his wrists.

He shouted my name.

"Emma!"

I stood against the wall, shaking.

"Emma, listen to me!"

I did not answer.

"Ashley did this."

Even then.

Even with three officers holding him down.

Even after putting a knife in his hand inside the safe house.

He blamed Ashley.

"She planned the mountain."

"She set me up."

"Emma, look at me."

I looked.

I wanted him to see that I was alive.

I wanted him to see Noah alive.

I wanted him to understand that the ending he had purchased, rehearsed, and celebrated had failed.

His eyes found the baby in the officer's arms.

Something changed in his face.

It was not love.

It was calculation.

He looked at Noah the way he looked at a locked bank account.

I stepped between them.

"You don't get to look at him."

Michael smiled through blood on his lip.

"He's my son."

"You tried to freeze him to death."

"That's not what happened."

I laughed.

The sound surprised both of us.

"I heard you."

His smile disappeared.

"I heard you from the ledge."

"I heard you tell Ashley I better be dead for fifty million dollars."

One officer tightened his grip on Michael's shoulder.

Michael's face changed again.

He had forgotten that part.

The mountain cameras had not recorded it clearly.

The watch had not captured it.

Only I had heard it.

And now he knew I remembered every word.

Rachel reached the property minutes later.

By then, firefighters had contained the utility-room fire.

Investigators found an incendiary device made from a timed electrical overload and accelerant.

The jammer was hidden in a fake service van near the property.

The fake firefighter was captured in the woods with a gunshot wound to the shoulder.

He was Trent Monroe.

Ashley had fled without her brother.

Michael had not.

He had used him.

Again.

Daniel Reeves's tracker had revealed the safe house.

Paul Mercer had provided the security layout before his arrest.

Trent created the fire.

Michael entered through a maintenance access point using a copied credential.

The entire attack had been designed to turn evacuation into abduction.

He did not intend to kill me inside the house.

He intended to take me somewhere else.

Police found restraints in a van parked half a mile away.

They found sedatives.

They found two fake passports.

One had Michael's photograph.

The other had mine.

Under the fake name, I was listed as his wife.

There was also an infant passport with Noah's age and a false name.

Michael had planned to kidnap us and leave the country as a family.

The idea sickened me more than a simple murder plan.

He wanted to erase my voice and keep my identity useful.

If police stopped him, he would say I was his unstable wife under medication.

If anyone saw Noah, he would say he was our son.

He would turn captivity into marriage with paperwork.

Rachel photographed every document.

Then she looked at Michael sitting handcuffed in a patrol vehicle.

"He's done running."

I wanted to believe her.

Michael was booked on attempted murder, conspiracy, kidnapping, evidence tampering, obstruction, financial fraud, witness intimidation, and multiple related offenses.

Trent faced his own list.

Paul Mercer was charged with corruption and obstruction.

Daniel Reeves remained in custody.

Nolan and Stephen were placed under federal protection as cooperating witnesses.

For the first time, Michael slept behind a locked door he did not control.

I slept less than two hours.

Every time the house settled, I heard his voice at my ear again.

Don't scream, Emma.

At dawn, I found Luke sitting in the kitchen with his injured arm in a new sling.

"You should be in a hospital."

"I was."

"They discharged me."

"Then you should be asleep."

"So should you."

Neither of us moved.

I sat across from him.

"Thank you."

He shook his head.

"Don't."

"You stopped him twice."

"The mountain and tonight."

Luke looked down at his coffee.

"Tonight, you stopped him first."

I remembered the elbow.

The coat slipping from his grip.

Noah leaving my arms safely before I ran.

For months before the cliff, Michael had convinced me I was becoming fragile.

He commented on how slowly I walked.

He told people pregnancy had made me anxious.

He answered questions for me at appointments.

He told me to rest while he took over decisions.

He had been building the story of a weak woman before he ever tried to kill me.

But weakness was never the reason I trusted him.

Trust was.

That distinction mattered.

Rachel arrived later with news from Canada.

Ashley had agreed to extradition.

She was also turning over the full recording archive.

"How much is there?"

"Forty-three recordings."

My stomach tightened.

"Of Michael?"

"Mostly."

"Some include Trent."

"Some include Curtis Vale."

Rebecca looked up sharply.

"Vale?"

Rachel nodded.

The first relevant recording involved the insurance claim.

Curtis's voice was clear.

"No body makes this slower."

Michael responded.

"Then make the mountain the body."

Curtis said, "I can argue presumption if recovery is impossible, but I need consistency."

Ashley asked, "What if she survives?"

There was a pause.

Then Curtis answered.

"Then none of this conversation ever happened."

The recording was dated four days before the cliff.

Rebecca stared at Rachel.

"He knew."

"At minimum, he knew they were discussing a death that had not happened yet."

Curtis Vale was arrested before lunch.

His law office was searched under a crime-fraud warrant.

Investigators seized encrypted drives, trust-account records, and a locked document case.

Inside the case was a draft petition seeking to have me declared legally dead.

It was prepared six days before Michael pushed me.

My funeral program had been prepared in the same office three days before the cliff.

The white roses.

The empty casket.

The photograph of me holding my pregnant belly.

All chosen while I was still alive in my own home.

I thought nothing could make that funeral more grotesque.

I was wrong.

A forensic search of Curtis's email uncovered an invoice from the funeral home.

Michael had paid the deposit himself.

Two days before he killed me.

The invoice note said:

PRIVATE SERVICE - WIFE AND INFANT.

I stared at those four words until my eyes burned.

Then Rachel placed one more document in front of me.

It came from Ashley's recordings.

A transcript dated the night before the cliff.

Ashley asked Michael what he would do after the funeral.

Michael answered:

"Smile."

"Collect."

"Marry you."

Ashley laughed.

Then she asked:

"And if Emma somehow comes back?"

Michael's answer was one sentence.

May you like

"Then I kill her where everyone can see it and make them believe she did it to herself."
