Chapter 2: The Hidden Compartment

I helped Sarah straighten.

“Are you hurt?” I whispered.

“I’m fine,” she said.

But her voice was tight.

Eleanor turned toward the guests, pretending concern.

“Someone get her a chair,” she announced. “Clearly this was too much for her.”

That was when Harrison appeared from inside the ballroom, dressed in a perfect black tuxedo.

“What happened?” he asked.

Eleanor’s expression changed instantly.

“My poor boy,” she said. “Your brother and his wife caused a scene.”

Harrison looked at Sarah’s leg, then at me.

For once, he didn’t speak.

Sarah reached down and touched a small latch hidden along the inner side of her prosthetic shaft.

Eleanor noticed.

Her smile faded.

“What are you doing?” she asked.

Sarah looked up.

“Showing everyone what your husband trusted us to protect.”

The latch clicked.

A narrow metal compartment opened.

Inside was a sealed flash drive wrapped in my father’s old handkerchief.
