Chapter 1: The Door

Chapter 1: The Door
Eleanor’s hand rested against the oak door like she owned every inch of the world behind it.
“We need to be careful about appearances,” she said, her voice smooth enough to sound polite to strangers. “This is Harrison’s wedding. Not some charity event.”
Sarah’s face stayed calm, but I felt the smallest tremor in her fingers.
I stepped forward.
“Move.”
Eleanor’s smile sharpened.
Before I could react, she pushed the heavy ballroom door inward, then let it swing back hard.
The edge struck Sarah’s prosthetic leg.
A metallic shriek tore through the foyer.
Sarah stumbled.
I caught her before she fell.
The entire room went silent.
Eleanor looked down at the leg trapped awkwardly against the doorframe.
Then she laughed softly.
“Oh dear,” she said. “How unfortunate.”
But Sarah wasn’t looking at Eleanor.
She was looking at me.
Not with fear.
With warning.
Because inside that prosthetic leg was something Eleanor had no idea existed.
May you like
Something my father had hidden before he died.
Something that could destroy her.
