Chapter 1: The Trap Springs

For three agonizing seconds, the only sound in the foyer was my father’s ragged breathing.

Then, survival instinct kicked in. Vivian lunged.

She wasn't the elegant, calculating socialite anymore; she was a desperate animal clawing for the phone in my hand. But I had anticipated the strike. I stepped smoothly to the side, and her stilettos betrayed her on the polished marble. She crashed hard to her knees, right where my father had been crawling just moments before.

"You little bitch," she hissed, scrambling up, her perfectly coiffed hair falling in jagged strands across her face. "That recording is illegal! You can't use it in court. Two-party consent state, remember your law school basics?"

I smiled, slipping the phone back into my pocket. "Texas is a one-party consent state, Vivian. And the nurse who recorded you? She was a party to that conversation. She’s also sitting in a black SUV at the end of the driveway with two federal investigators."

Marcus finally broke out of his stupor. "Feds?" His voice cracked, the arrogant bravado evaporating. "Mom, what did you do?"

"Shut up, Marcus!" Vivian snapped, her eyes darting frantically toward the heavy oak front doors. "She’s bluffing. She doesn’t have anything. Richard’s signature is on those documents."

"Forged under medical duress," I corrected, pulling a thick manila envelope from my leather tote and tossing it onto the foyer table. It landed with a heavy, satisfying thud. "I filed an emergency injunction at 8:00 a.m. this morning. A judge froze every single bank account tied to your name, Vivian. Your credit cards are dead plastic. The offshore accounts you tried to wire Hale Construction funds into? Seized."

Vivian’s face contorted in sheer panic. She reached into her designer purse and pulled out her phone, frantically tapping the screen.

"Try the Platinum Amex," I suggested helpfully. "I hear it declines with a really loud beep."

Before she could hit dial, the heavy front doors swung open. Three men in dark suits stepped into the entryway, their badges catching the ambient light.

"Vivian Hale?" the lead agent asked, his voice deadpan. "You’re under arrest for wire fraud, elder abuse, and conspiracy to commit extortion."
