As officers prepared to arrest David, Rebecca suddenly stepped between them.
"This is ridiculous!"
"Families argue!"
"My son is a successful businessman!"
The older officer looked at her calmly.
"Ma'am, assault is a crime regardless of income."
Rebecca's face turned crimson.
"You can't arrest him over one little mistake."
Elena looked directly into her eyes.
"One mistake?"
She slowly turned toward Maya.
"Tell them."
Maya took a deep breath.
"He shoved me into a wall last Christmas."
"He slapped me after my promotion."
"He controlled every bank account."
"He made me ask permission before seeing my own mother."
Every sentence landed like another blow.
Rebecca's confident expression disappeared.
The younger officer quietly asked,
"Mrs. Vance, would you like assistance obtaining a protective order?"
Maya looked at her mother.
Then she nodded.
"Yes."
The handcuffs clicked around David's wrists.
