PART 3: The Truth Comes Out

Two Boston police officers entered the restaurant.

The older officer immediately noticed Maya's swollen scalp, her shaking hands, and the terrified expression she couldn't hide.

"What happened here?"

David pointed at Elena.

"My mother-in-law is trying to ruin my marriage."

The officer calmly turned toward Maya.

"Ma'am..."

"Did your husband pull your hair?"

Maya opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

David stared directly at her.

Rebecca quietly folded her arms.

Years of intimidation filled the silence.

Then Elena reached across the table and gently held her daughter's hand.

"You don't have to protect him anymore."

Maya finally broke.

"Yes."

Her voice barely rose above a whisper.

"He does this whenever he's angry."

The restaurant fell silent again.

The officer asked another question.

"Has this happened before?"

Maya nodded through tears.

"For almost four years."

A collective gasp spread across the dining room.

One officer accepted videos from several witnesses.

Another photographed the injuries on Maya's scalp.

Then the waitress stepped forward.

"I've seen them here before."

Everyone turned toward her.

"Every time they came in, she apologized for everything... even when she did nothing wrong."

David lowered his head.

The evidence had become overwhelming.
