Chapter 1: The Debt Hidden Beneath the Engagement

Chapter 1: The Debt Hidden Beneath the Engagement

No one spoke.

No one dared.

The ballroom remained frozen as Luca Marcone slowly released Savannah's face.

He slipped one hand into the pocket of his black trousers.

Adrian instinctively stepped backward.

"So..." Adrian forced a laugh that fooled no one. "You're trying to intimidate us?"

Luca looked almost bored.

"I don't intimidate people."

His voice never rose.

"I simply tell them what they already owe."

Gerald Whitmore swallowed hard.

"Luca... this isn't necessary."

Savannah turned toward her stepfather.

It was the first time she had ever seen fear in his eyes.

Not embarrassment.

Not anger.

Fear.

Luca withdrew a slim black envelope.

There was no logo.

No name.

Only Gerald's full signature across the seal.

He tossed it onto a nearby table.

"Open it."

Gerald didn't move.

"You know what's inside."

Savannah frowned.

"What is it?"

Luca answered without looking at her.

"A contract signed eleven years ago."

Gerald's breathing became uneven.

"It should have been destroyed."

"I don't destroy evidence."

Luca folded his arms.

"I preserve it."

Adrian looked between them.

"What contract?"

Gerald finally shouted.

"Stay out of this!"

The sudden outburst shocked the room.

Luca ignored him.

"Eleven years ago your company was bankrupt."

He looked directly at Savannah.

"Your mother had just died."

Her heart skipped.

"You remember that year?"

She nodded silently.

"You were seventeen."

"You inherited shares in Whitmore Holdings from your mother."

Gerald closed his eyes.

He already knew where this conversation was heading.

"But those shares prevented Gerald from selling the company."

Luca continued calmly.

"So he needed a solution."

Savannah felt cold.

"What solution?"

"You."

The ballroom seemed smaller.

Gerald whispered,

"I was protecting everyone..."

"You were protecting yourself."

Luca interrupted.

"You signed an agreement with the Voss family."

Adrian's father suddenly lowered his head.

Ashamed.

"In exchange for future business investments..."

Luca paused.

"...Savannah would eventually marry Adrian."

Gasps spread across the ballroom.

"It wasn't love."

"It wasn't fate."

"It wasn't coincidence."

"It was an acquisition."

Savannah stared at Adrian.

He couldn't meet her eyes.

"You knew?"

Adrian whispered,

"My parents arranged it..."

"But I..."

"You still slept with my sister."

Silence.

He had no answer.

Luca picked up the envelope again.

"The engagement wasn't broken tonight."

"It was sold eleven years ago."

Savannah felt as though every memory of her relationship had shattered at once.

Every anniversary.

Every promise.

Every kiss.

May you like

Purchased.

Every single one.
