Chapter 18: The Unseen Invitation

Three weeks passed in a blur of absolute peace at the Vance estate.

The nursery was finally complete—a warm, beautiful sanctuary filled with soft lighting, hand-carved wooden furniture, and shelves stacked with classic children's stories. My father and brother had fussed over every minute detail, turning the space into a haven of comfort and security.

I was sitting in the custom Milanese rocking chair by the window, reading a book and enjoying the quiet afternoon breeze, when my private phone buzzed on the side table.

It wasn't Arthur this time. It was a number I hadn't seen in over four years—an old college friend named Maya, who worked as a senior investigative journalist for a major national financial publication.

I tapped the screen to answer. "Maya? It’s been a long time."

"Vivienne!" Maya’s voice came through the line, breathless and urgent. "Oh, thank goodness you answered. I’ve been trying to reach you through official channels for a week!"

I frowned, lowering my book. "What is it, Maya? Is everything alright?"

"That depends on how you look at it," Maya said quickly. "Listen, I’m working on a massive investigative piece regarding corporate fraud and shell companies operating out of the Northeast corridor. We’ve been tracking a network called Apex Holdings."

My posture stiffened slightly. Apex Holdings—the exact shell company that had been funneling illicit kickbacks into Dominic Sterling’s personal bank account.

"Go on," I said, my tone sharpening.

"Well," Maya continued, her voice dropping lower as if someone might overhear. "While digging into the primary beneficial owners of Apex Holdings, our forensic team hit a massive wall. The ultimate parent entity shielding those accounts isn't Davis Pharmaceuticals. It’s an offshore trust managed by a private equity firm in Zurich."

"Whose trust?" I asked.

"That’s the crazy part," Maya said, taking a breath. "The trust was established five years ago by an anonymous benefactor closely tied to high-level pharmaceutical distribution networks in this country. And the primary secondary beneficiary listed on the account—the person designated to inherit the full liquidation value if the primary holder is convicted of federal fraud—is none other than your ex-husband, Dominic Sterling."

Silence filled the line for a long, heavy moment.

I stared out the nursery window, my mind racing. Dominic had always claimed he knew nothing about Richard Davis’s offshore shell companies. He had sworn up and down in court that he was an "unwitting participant."

But if his name was listed as the primary secondary beneficiary on the Apex Holdings trust...

"He wasn't just receiving kickbacks, Maya," I whispered, the puzzle pieces clicking together with terrifying clarity. "He was set to inherit the entire fraudulent enterprise once Richard Davis stepped down."

"Exactly," Maya confirmed. "Dominic wasn't just a pawn in his father-in-law's scheme. He was the designated successor. And the federal prosecutors don't know that yet—because the Swiss trust documents were buried under layers of corporate encryption that only just cleared yesterday."

My heart beat a little faster, not out of fear, but out of a sudden, sharp realization of how deep the deception really went. Dominic hadn't just been a coward who stood by while his family abused me. He had been an active, greedy co-conspirator who planned to secure his luxurious lifestyle through illegal corporate plunder all along.

"Maya," I said calmly, my voice steady. "Hold on for a moment."

I tapped my intercom button to connect directly to Arthur Vance’s office downstairs.

"Arthur," I said the moment the line clicked. "Get me the latest federal indictment files on Dominic Sterling. And connect me to our chief legal counsel. We have a new piece of evidence to hand over to the prosecutor's office."

"Right away, Ms. Vance," Arthur replied instantly.

I turned back to the phone. "Maya? Are you still there?"

May you like

"I'm here," Maya breathed. "What are you going to do?"

"I'm going to make sure," I said softly, looking at the peaceful nursery around me, "that Dominic gets the exact future he planned for himself."
