Chapter 16: The Nursery Sanctuary

Far away from the cold concrete walls of the federal holding facility, the Vance estate was bathed in the warm, golden light of late afternoon.

Upstairs on the second floor, the newly renovated nursery was a masterpiece of calm elegance. Soft pastel tones of cream and pale sage green lined the walls, complemented by custom white woodwork and the imported Milanese rocking chair sitting quietly in the corner.

I stood by the window, gently smoothing my hand over my pale blue cardigan as I looked out over the sprawling green lawns of the estate.

My father walked into the nursery, holding a small silver tray with a glass of fresh lemonade and a plate of shortbread cookies.

"Thinking about the court filings?" my father asked gently, setting the tray down on a small side table and walking over to stand beside me.

I shook my head, offering a faint, peaceful smile. "Not really, Dad. Just... realizing how much energy I wasted trying to fit into a world that was never worth my time."

My father put a comforting arm around my shoulders, pulling me close. "You survived it, Vivienne. And you stayed true to yourself. That's what matters."

"I know," I murmured, resting my head against his shoulder. "And the baby is going to grow up knowing what real strength looks like. Not the fake, superficial status that the Davises cared about, but genuine resilience."

"Speaking of resilience," my father said with a slight twinkle in his eye, "Arthur informed me that the final liquidation auction of the Davis family estate concluded an hour ago."

I looked up, raising an eyebrow. "Oh? Did anyone show up?"

"A few curious socialites, mostly," my father chuckled. "And as for Eleanor and Chloe... according to our reports, they’ve had to move into a modest, two-bedroom apartment on the far side of town, relying entirely on whatever minor jewelry Chloe managed to sneak out before the federal seizure."

I let out a soft, reflective breath. No anger. No satisfaction born of malice. Just the quiet closing of a very ugly chapter.

"They got exactly what they built," I said softly.

"Indeed," my father agreed. Then his expression softened into deep paternal warmth as he looked down at my stomach. "Now, do you think we can focus on the important matters? Like whether this room needs one more bookshelf or two?"

I laughed, the last lingering shadow of the past three years finally dissolving into the warm afternoon air.

May you like

"Definitely two, Dad. You can never have too many books."

Little did I know, down in the city, an unexpected package was currently making its way through the Vance estate security checkpoint—one that contained a shocking final message from Chloe.
