Chapter 3: The Truth Maya Had Hidden

After Brenda and Rachel finally left with their luggage, the house felt strangely peaceful.
Too peaceful.
Marcus helped Maya sit on the couch.
"You've been hiding something."
She looked away.
"I didn't want you to choose between me and your mother."
"I already made that choice."
Her eyes filled with tears.
She slowly rolled up the sleeve of her sweater.
Dark bruises covered her forearm.
Marcus froze.
"How?"
"Mom grabbed me."
"When?"
"The day after you left."
Maya hesitated.
"She said if I couldn't keep the house perfect while carrying your child... then I wasn't worthy of being your wife."
Marcus's breathing slowed.
His face showed no anger.
Only disappointment.
He quietly stood.
"I'm making one more phone call."
This time...
May you like
It wasn't to the lawyer.
It was to his father.
