CHAPTER 3 — THE TRUTH THEY COULDN'T ESCAPE

The next morning...

Robert returned with another visitor.

A financial investigator.

Boxes of bank records covered the living room.

Hour after hour...

Every transaction was examined.

Every signature verified.

Every transfer traced.

The evidence became overwhelming.

Chloe had secretly convinced our mother that Dad wanted to "simplify" the finances while he was receiving treatment.

Instead...

She had been draining his accounts.

Even worse...

Jason finally confessed.

"I knew."

Every face turned toward him.

He lowered his head.

"Chloe asked me to keep quiet."

He swallowed hard.

"She promised we'd leave together after the estate was settled."

The room exploded.

"You planned this?"

My mother stared at her younger daughter as though she were seeing a stranger.

Chloe finally broke.

"I deserved something!"

She screamed.

"Hannah left! She got the education! She got the career! Dad loved her more!"

"No."

I answered calmly.

"He believed in both of us."

"You simply mistook generosity for weakness."

Police officers arrived that afternoon.

Fraud.

Forgery.

Financial exploitation of a vulnerable adult.

Chloe left the house in handcuffs.

Jason walked away alone.

The guests who had remained the night before quietly slipped out, unable to meet anyone's eyes.

The mansion felt strangely peaceful.

For the first time since Dad died...

The silence no longer hurt.
