CHAPTER 2 — THE HOUSE WAS NEVER HERS

No one moved.
No one breathed.
Robert Miller calmly placed the leather folder on the dining table.
"I believe everyone should see this."
My mother's hands trembled.
"That... that's impossible."
Robert opened the first document.
"This is the deed to the property."
He turned it toward everyone.
"The legal owner of this residence is Hannah Brooks."
Silence.
Then another page.
"Your late husband transferred ownership of the house to his eldest daughter three years ago."
My mother's face lost every trace of color.
"Why would he do that?"
Robert didn't hesitate.
"Because he anticipated exactly this situation."
The room erupted.
"What?"
Robert continued.
"Mr. Brooks amended his estate plan after discovering that several family assets had been withdrawn without his authorization."
Every eye slowly turned toward Chloe.
She forced an awkward laugh.
"Are you accusing me?"
"I'm stating documented facts."
Robert removed another folder.
"Luxury vehicle purchased eight months ago."
He slid the receipt across the table.
"Paid from your father's investment account."
Another document.
"Designer jewelry."
Another.
"Three overseas vacations."
Another.
"More than four hundred thousand dollars disappeared over the past two years."
My mother stared at Chloe.
"...Tell me this isn't true."
Chloe's confident smile finally disappeared.
"I..."
She couldn't finish.
Robert spoke quietly.
"Your father knew."
The words shattered the room.
"He hired a private forensic accountant."
He placed one final envelope before me.
"This letter was to be opened only if someone attempted to remove you from this house."
My fingers trembled as I unfolded it.
My dearest Hannah,
If you're reading this, then my greatest fear has come true.
You were always the child who asked for nothing.
You worked.
You built your own life.
You never measured love in money.
That is exactly why I trusted you with this home.
A house is not brick and wood.
It's where kindness lives.
If kindness ever disappears...
Protect it.
And never feel guilty for standing up for yourself.
I will always love you.
—Dad
By the time I reached the last line...
I could barely see through my tears.
Across the table...
My mother quietly began to cry.
For the first time that evening...
Not one person defended Chloe.
