Chapter 5 — The Last Salute

Three weeks later...

The Whitmore family estate was unusually quiet.

Andrew sat across from Rebecca at their kitchen table.

"I've moved out of my mother's foundation."

"I resigned from every board she controlled."

"I told her I won't have a relationship with her unless she sincerely apologizes."

Rebecca listened without interrupting.

"I can't change what I failed to do."

He looked at her with tears threatening to form.

"But I can decide who I become now."

Rebecca was silent for a long moment.

"I never needed you to defend my rank."

"I needed you to defend your wife."

Andrew lowered his eyes.

"I know."

Months later...

Eleanor requested a meeting.

Not at her mansion.

Not at a country club.

At the Navy Memorial.

She arrived without diamonds.

Without designer gowns.

Without an audience.

When Rebecca approached in civilian clothes, Eleanor stood immediately.

"I spent seven years trying to make you smaller."

Her voice trembled.

"Because I couldn't accept that the strongest officer in my family wasn't my son."

Tears filled her eyes.

"I'm sorry."

Rebecca looked at the woman who had spent years denying her identity.

Forgiveness did not come quickly.

It was not dramatic.

It was earned.

"I accept your apology."

"But trust has to be rebuilt."

Eleanor nodded.

"I understand."

Months later, at another Navy gala, the master of ceremonies announced the honored guests.

Eleanor stood proudly beside Andrew.

When Rebecca entered in her white dress uniform, Eleanor smiled through quiet tears.

She spoke before anyone else could.

"Ladies and gentlemen..."

"It is my honor to introduce my daughter-in-law..."

She paused.

Her voice steady.

"Captain Rebecca Whitmore, United States Navy."

The ballroom erupted in applause.

Rebecca returned the greeting with a composed salute.

This time...

May you like

No one questioned who she was.

And no one ever would again.
