Chapter 3 — Seven Years of Lies

The formal procession should have begun.

Instead...

No one moved.

The admiral quietly addressed the room.

"Before tonight's ceremony, there is one matter that deserves recognition."

He nodded toward Rebecca.

"Captain Whitmore recently declined public recognition for classified operations."

"She requested that the credit remain with her crew."

A projector screen slowly lowered behind the stage.

Photos appeared.

Rebecca standing aboard a destroyer.

Rebecca briefing international commanders.

Rebecca receiving decorations from senior admirals.

Rebecca shaking hands with allied naval officers.

Years.

Entire years.

Photographs Eleanor had never seen.

Because she had never cared enough to ask.

A retired admiral chuckled softly.

"I served under Captain Whitmore."

Another officer smiled.

"She trained half the commanders in this room."

A female commander added quietly,

"She's the reason I stayed in the Navy."

Each sentence struck Eleanor harder than the last.

Then one elderly vice admiral spoke.

"I remember meeting Mrs. Whitmore years ago."

He looked directly at Eleanor.

"You introduced Captain Whitmore as someone who filed paperwork."

Several uncomfortable laughs rippled through the ballroom.

Eleanor's face turned crimson.

"I... I didn't know."

Rebecca finally spoke.

Her voice remained calm.

"You never asked."

Silence.

"For seven years..."

"You preferred a version of me that made you comfortable."

She took one slow step forward.

"You weren't embarrassed by my career."

"You were embarrassed that mine surpassed your son's."

Andrew closed his eyes.

May you like

Because he knew...

She was right.
