Chapter 4 — The Truth Behind the Marriage

After the meeting, Ethan asked Claire for ten minutes alone.

She agreed.

They stood inside the now-empty boardroom.

For a long moment, neither spoke.

Finally, Ethan whispered,

"Why didn't you ever tell me you owned everything?"

Claire looked through the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Dallas.

"Because I wanted someone to love me."

She turned back toward him.

"Not my money."

"My position."

"My company."

"Me."

Tears formed in Ethan's eyes.

"I did love you."

Claire's expression softened—but only briefly.

"No."

"You loved the version of yourself you became because of me."

She walked slowly around the table.

"I gave you confidence."

"I gave you opportunities."

"I defended your mistakes."

"I promoted you when others wanted someone more qualified."

"I believed you would grow into the man I hoped you could become."

She stopped only a few feet away.

"But yesterday..."

"You chose silence."

"And silence is a decision."

Ethan lowered his head.

"I was afraid of disappointing my mother."

Claire nodded sadly.

"And you weren't afraid of disappointing your wife."

He had no answer.

That silence ended their marriage more completely than any judge ever could.
