Chapter 3 — The Clause Nobody Read

Ethan slammed both hands against the conference table.

"This is revenge!"

"No," Claire replied calmly.

"It's a contract."

She nodded toward the company's legal counsel.

The attorney opened Ethan's employment agreement.

Page twenty-seven.

Paragraph twelve.

The clause Claire had mentioned.

"If an executive engages in conduct that damages the reputation, safety, or interests of the company's owner..."

The lawyer continued reading.

"...all unvested bonuses, stock options, executive severance, retention compensation, and deferred incentive awards are immediately forfeited."

Linda frowned.

"What does that mean?"

The CFO answered.

"It means your son leaves with nothing."

"No bonus."

"No severance."

"No company shares."

"No pension enhancements."

"No executive benefits."

Ethan grabbed the agreement.

"I never saw this!"

Claire met his eyes.

"You signed every page."

He flipped desperately through the document.

There it was.

His own signature.

On every single page.

His breathing became uneven.

Years of promotions.

Years of bonuses.

Years of believing he had earned a future worth millions.

Gone.

With one signature he had never bothered to read.

Linda slowly turned toward Claire.

"You planned this."

Claire shook her head.

"I prepared for the day someone would mistake my kindness for weakness."
