Chapter 9 - THE HOUSE IN WINNETKA

Charles Whitmore's old house in Winnetka had been empty for eighteen months, but Claire still expected to hear his keys drop into the ceramic bowl by the door.

She arrived after dark with Lily asleep in the back seat and two Whitmore security cars behind her.

Elaine was already waiting on the front steps.

The moment Claire saw her mother's face, she knew the truth would not be simple.

Elaine ran to the car and opened Lily's door.

"Baby."

Lily woke halfway and reached for her.

"Mom?"

Elaine held her so tightly that Lily squeaked.

"I'm fine."

"I know."

Elaine kissed her hair.

"I know."

Claire stood a few feet away, arms folded against the cold.

"You knew Margaret might come for her."

Elaine looked at Claire over Lily's shoulder.

"I knew she might panic if Thomas's name came up."

"Why?"

Elaine looked at the security team.

"Inside."

Claire had Lily settled in Charles's old den with food, a blanket, and a movie.

Two security officers stayed in the hall.

Then Claire and Elaine went into the kitchen.

The room had barely changed.

Copper pans still hung above the island.

Charles's chipped blue coffee mug still sat on a shelf because no one had been able to decide what to do with it.

Elaine touched the back of one chair.

"I should have told you years ago."

Claire did not sit.

"Start with Thomas."

Elaine nodded.

"Thomas Harrington was Lily's father."

Claire had imagined several answers during the drive.

None prepared her for hearing the words aloud.

She gripped the kitchen island.

"Ethan's father."

"Yes."

"Lily is Ethan's half sister."

"Yes."

Claire stared at her mother.

The room seemed too small.

"You had an affair with Thomas Harrington?"

Elaine flinched.

"No."

"Then explain."

"Thomas and Margaret had been privately separated for nearly a year."

"They lived together."

"For appearances."

Elaine gave a bitter smile.

"People with that much money sometimes call a marriage alive long after everything human inside it is dead."

Claire thought of the previous night.

She said nothing.

Elaine continued.

"I met Thomas at Northwestern Memorial."

"You were his nurse?"

"No."

"I was working cardiac rehab."

"He volunteered with a foundation program after his first stroke."

Elaine looked down at her hands.

"We became friends."

"Then more."

"Yes."

Claire breathed slowly.

"Did Charles know?"

Elaine nodded.

"Eventually."

That hurt in a strange way.

Charles had been Claire's father, but he and Elaine had never married.

They had loved each other badly when they were young, then spent decades becoming something quieter and more loyal.

Claire had grown up believing their complicated friendship was the reason he remained in her life without living with them.

Now another secret sat underneath it.

"When did Margaret find out?"

"When I was seven months pregnant."

Elaine's face tightened at the memory.

"She came to my apartment with an attorney."

"What did she want?"

"For me to sign a confidentiality agreement and accept a payment."

"Did you?"

"No."

"What did Thomas do?"

"He told her Lily was his child and that he intended to acknowledge her privately until Ethan was older."

Claire stared at her.

"Privately?"

"He was ashamed of how much fear controlled him."

Elaine's voice softened.

"He loved Ethan."

"He believed a public scandal would let Margaret turn Ethan against him and destroy the company."

"So everyone lied."

Elaine looked at her.

"Yes."

Claire laughed without humor.

"Apparently that is the family business."

Elaine did not defend herself.

That made it harder to stay angry.

"What does the trust have to do with Lily?"

Elaine took a breath.

"Thomas created a medical trust when Lily was born."

"That's what we found."

"It paid for part of her early care."

"Part?"

Elaine looked toward the hallway.

"Lily was born with a heart defect."

Claire frowned.

"I know."

"You know she had surgery."

"You do not know who paid for it."

Claire's chest tightened.

"Thomas."

"Thomas and Charles."

Elaine nodded.

"They met because of Lily."

The connections suddenly rearranged themselves.

Thomas Harrington had not merely saved Whitmore in some old business dispute.

Charles and Thomas had shared something far more personal.

A child they both wanted protected.

"What did Thomas do for Dad?"

Elaine walked to a cabinet.

She opened it and removed a small metal cashbox Claire had never noticed before.

Inside was a key.

"Charles kept this here."

"What does it open?"

"His basement document safe."

Claire stared.

"The safe was emptied after he died."

"Not the lower compartment."

They went downstairs.

Charles's office smelled faintly of cedar and dust.

Behind a bookcase stood the old steel safe Claire remembered from childhood.

Daniel's team had removed the obvious contents after Charles died.

Elaine knelt and reached beneath the bottom shelf.

A hidden panel released.

Inside was a narrow envelope.

Claire's name was written on it.

Again.

She almost laughed at her father's obsession with posthumous instructions.

Inside were three documents.

The first was a DNA test.

Probability of paternity: 99.998 percent.

Thomas Harrington was Lily Bennett's biological father.

The second was a notarized acknowledgment signed by Thomas.

The third was an amendment to the Harrington Family Legacy Trust.

Claire read the first paragraph.

Then the second.

Then she stopped.

"Mom."

Elaine's eyes filled.

"I know."

Thomas had granted Lily a twelve-percent beneficial interest in the family trust upon his death.

Not because he wanted to punish Ethan.

The document said the opposite.

He wanted both of his children protected.

But the amendment had never been administered.

It had never appeared in the trust records Ethan showed Whitmore.

It had apparently vanished.

Claire's hand tightened around the paper.

"Margaret stole this."

"We don't know that."

"She knew about Lily."

"Yes."

"She controls the family trust."

"Yes."

"And twelve percent disappeared."

Elaine looked away.

Claire's voice sharpened.

"Why didn't you enforce it?"

"Because Thomas died before he could make the public acknowledgment he promised."

"This is notarized."

"Margaret threatened to challenge everything."

"So?"

Elaine's face broke.

"She threatened you."

Claire stopped.

"What?"

"You were dating Ethan by then."

"Only a few months."

"She knew."

Elaine wiped at her eyes.

"Margaret said if I asserted Lily's claim, she would tell Ethan that you had approached him because our family wanted Harrington money."

Claire stared.

"That makes no sense."

"It did not have to make sense."

"It only had to poison him before you were ready to tell him who Charles was."

Claire felt suddenly sick.

Margaret had known how carefully Claire protected the one relationship she believed existed outside wealth.

She had used that secrecy as leverage.

"Dad knew?"

"Yes."

"And he let her do this?"

Elaine's voice hardened.

"Your father did not let her do anything."

"He told me to wait."

"He said he would build enough evidence that Margaret could not bury Lily's claim without exposing everything else."

"Northstar."

Elaine nodded.

"Northstar."

A floorboard creaked behind them.

Claire turned.

Lily stood on the basement stairs clutching the blanket.

Her face was pale.

"Thomas was my dad?"

Elaine closed her eyes.

Claire's heart dropped.

"Bug."

Lily looked from one woman to the other.

"Ethan's dad was my dad?"

Claire moved toward her.

"Come upstairs."

"Is Ethan my brother?"

No one answered fast enough.

Lily began crying.

Not loudly.

That made it worse.

"Why didn't anybody tell me?"

Elaine crossed the room.

"Sweetheart."

Lily stepped back.

"Everybody knows things about me except me."

Claire felt the words like an accusation aimed at every adult in the room.

She knelt at the bottom of the stairs.

"You're right."

Elaine looked at her.

Claire kept her eyes on Lily.

"You're completely right."

"We should have told you when you were old enough to understand."

Lily wiped her face.

"Am I old enough now?"

Claire swallowed.

"Yes."

She held out her hand.

"And from now on, nobody gets to make decisions about your story without you being part of them."

Lily looked at her hand.

Then she took it.

Claire pulled her close.

Over Lily's shoulder, Elaine pressed one hand to her mouth.

The moment lasted until Claire's phone buzzed.

She nearly ignored it.

Then she saw Daniel's name.

URGENT.

She opened the message.

STERLING HAS CALLED A PRESS CONFERENCE FOR 8 A.M.

A second message followed.

TOPIC: WHITMORE RETALIATION, HARRINGTON CONTROL, AND AN UNDISCLOSED HEIR.

Claire looked at Lily.

Victor knew.

After Lily learned the truth about Thomas, she refused to sleep in Charles's old house.

She said the walls knew too many secrets.

Claire understood.

They returned to the Whitmore residential suite near dawn.

Lily climbed into Claire's bed despite insisting she was too old for that six months earlier.

For almost an hour, she asked questions in the dark.

Did Thomas know her favorite color?

Had he ever held her?

Did Ethan know she existed when he drove through the blizzard during her pneumonia?

Was Margaret technically her stepmother even if everyone hated that sentence?

Claire answered what she knew and refused to invent what she did not.

When Lily asked whether Thomas had abandoned her, Claire struggled.

She finally said Thomas loved Lily privately when Lily deserved to be loved publicly.

Lily said that sounded unfair.

Claire agreed.

Then Lily asked whether Claire had done the same thing by hiding Whitmore from Ethan.

The question hurt because it was intelligent.

Claire explained that hiding money and hiding a child were not the same, but admitted that secrecy still had costs.

She said she had wanted proof Ethan loved Claire without the Whitmore name.

Lily asked whether she got the proof.

Claire stared into the dark.

"I got an answer."

Lily was quiet.

Then she moved closer and said answers were sometimes rude.

Claire laughed softly.

"Yes."

They fell asleep holding hands.
