Chapter 8 - THE SCHOOL GATE

The discovery about Lily changed the temperature of the investigation.
Until that moment, Claire had been able to divide the world into categories.
Marriage.
Business.
Her father.
Harrington Development.
Now every line crossed through a ten-year-old girl who should have been worrying about spelling tests and grilled cheese.
Claire called her mother first.
Elaine Bennett answered on the third ring from her nursing shift in Evanston.
"Claire?"
"Mom, I need to ask you something."
Elaine heard the tone immediately.
"Is Lily okay?"
"She's fine."
Claire paused.
"Do you know the name Thomas Harrington?"
Silence.
Not confusion.
Silence.
Claire closed her eyes.
"Mom."
Elaine whispered, "Where did you hear that name?"
Claire stood up so quickly her chair rolled backward.
"You know him."
"Claire, not on the phone."
"Why?"
"Because I said not on the phone."
Elaine had never spoken to her that way.
Claire lowered her voice.
"Then come to Whitmore Tower."
"I can't leave until three."
"I'll send a car."
"No."
"Mom."
"Pick Lily up from school first."
Something in Elaine's voice made Claire's skin turn cold.
"Why?"
"Just do it."
"Why?"
Elaine exhaled.
"Because if Thomas Harrington's name is in your files, someone may realize you are asking questions."
Claire's heart slammed once.
"Who?"
The line went quiet.
Then Elaine said four words.
"Do not trust Margaret."
The call ended.
Claire was moving before Daniel finished asking what happened.
Whitmore security took one car.
Claire took another.
She hated every second of the drive north.
At 2:47 p.m., Lily's elementary school appeared beyond a row of bare trees.
Parents were already gathering near the pickup lane.
Claire called the office.
"This is Claire Bennett-Whitmore. I am Lily Bennett's authorized guardian. Please keep her inside until I arrive."
The secretary sounded confused.
"Ms. Bennett, Lily was signed out ten minutes ago."
Claire's entire body went cold.
"By whom?"
Keyboard clicks.
"It says family pickup."
"Name."
"One moment."
Claire's driver accelerated toward the curb.
The secretary returned.
"Margaret Harrington."
Claire stopped breathing.
"That is not an authorized guardian."
"The note says she presented a family authorization letter."
"There is no letter."
Claire opened the car door before it fully stopped.
The security lead caught up with her at the entrance.
"Ms. Whitmore."
"Find the camera feeds."
Inside the office, the secretary was pale.
"I am so sorry."
Claire gripped the counter.
"Show me the letter."
The secretary printed a scanned copy.
It carried Claire's name at the bottom.
The signature looked close.
Too close.
But Claire knew exactly where it came from.
The authorization language had been copied from a form she signed two years earlier when Ethan picked Lily up during Claire's surgery.
Only the authorized adult's name had been changed.
"Call the police," Claire said.
The secretary reached for the phone.
Claire's cell rang.
Ethan.
She answered instantly.
"Do you know where your mother is?"
Ethan's voice changed.
"Why?"
"She signed Lily out of school with a forged letter."
"What?"
"Where is she?"
"I don't know."
"Find out."
"Claire, I'm coming."
"Find her first."
Claire hung up.
Security pulled the exterior camera footage onto a monitor.
Margaret appeared at 2:34.
She wore a camel coat and carried an umbrella.
Lily followed her out.
The girl did not appear frightened.
That almost made it worse.
Margaret bent down and said something to her.
Lily hesitated.
Then a black sedan pulled up.
Claire leaned toward the screen.
"Zoom in."
The license plate sharpened.
Whitmore security ran it.
Registered to Sterling Capital Fleet Services.
Claire stared.
"Victor."
Her phone rang again.
This time it was an unknown number.
She answered.
"Hello?"
Lily's voice came through.
"Claire?"
Claire's knees nearly gave out.
"Bug, where are you?"
"I'm okay."
"Where are you?"
"Mrs. Harrington says we're getting hot chocolate."
Claire looked at the security officer.
He was already signaling for a trace request.
"Is Margaret with you?"
"She went inside somewhere."
"Inside where?"
Lily paused.
"A hotel."
Claire's mind raced.
"Can you see a name?"
"There's a big L on the napkin."
The Langham.
Claire's blood turned cold.
The same hotel where Brooke had been meeting Ethan.
"Lily, listen to me very carefully."
"Okay."
"Stay where other people can see you."
"I am in the lobby."
"Good."
"A man gave me his phone because mine is dead."
Claire almost cried with relief.
"Put the man on."
A stranger's voice came through.
"Hi, this is David. Your sister asked to call you. She's sitting with my wife and me near the concierge desk."
"Do not let anyone take her anywhere."
"We won't."
"Security is coming."
Claire ran back toward the car.
The ride from Lake Forest to downtown felt impossible.
Police met Whitmore security at the hotel.
Claire arrived nineteen minutes later.
She saw Lily before the doors fully opened.
The girl was sitting on a velvet chair holding a paper cup with both hands.
Claire crossed the lobby at a run.
Lily stood.
"Claire?"
Claire dropped to her knees and wrapped both arms around her.
For several seconds, she could not speak.
Lily hugged her back.
"I'm okay."
Claire pressed her face into her sister's hair.
"I know."
"Mrs. Harrington said you asked her to pick me up."
Claire pulled back.
"I didn't."
Lily's eyes widened.
"Oh."
Claire took a breath.
"Did she say why she brought you here?"
"She said someone wanted to talk to me about Grandpa Charles."
Claire froze.
"Who?"
Lily pointed toward the elevators.
"A lady in a red coat."
Brooke had worn a red dress the night before.
Claire's pulse accelerated.
"Did you talk to her?"
"Only for a minute."
"What did she ask?"
Lily looked confused.
"She asked if Mom ever told me about my real dad."
Everything inside Claire went still.
"What did you say?"
"I said my dad died before I was born."
Elaine had always told Lily that.
Claire had believed it too.
Lily continued.
"Then she asked if I had ever seen a picture of Thomas."
Claire's mouth went dry.
"Thomas Harrington?"
Lily shrugged.
"She just said Thomas."
Claire stood slowly.
At that moment Ethan entered the lobby.
He saw Lily.
Relief crossed his face.
Then he saw Claire's expression.
"What happened?"
Claire stepped between him and Lily instinctively.
Ethan stopped.
That movement hurt him visibly.
"Your mother used a forged authorization to remove my sister from school."
"I know."
"The car belongs to Sterling."
Ethan looked toward the elevators.
"Where is she?"
"Gone."
Police had already searched the lobby, restaurant, meeting floors, and garage.
Margaret had left through a service exit six minutes before Claire arrived.
Brooke was not registered as a guest.
Neither was Victor.
Ethan looked at Lily.
"Are you okay, bug?"
Lily's face softened automatically.
Ethan had been part of her life for three years.
She had loved him without understanding what adults had done to each other.
"I'm okay."
Ethan swallowed.
"I'm sorry."
Lily looked at Claire.
Claire hated that a child had to decide whether an adult was safe.
Her phone rang.
Elaine.
Claire answered.
"I have Lily."
Her mother's breath broke with relief.
"Thank God."
"Mom, Brooke asked her about Thomas."
Silence.
"Mom."
Elaine began crying.
Claire closed her eyes.
"Tell me."
"Not there."
"Then where?"
"Your father's old house."
Claire frowned.
"The one in Winnetka?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
Elaine took a shaking breath.
"Because that's where Thomas Harrington gave me Lily."
Claire could not speak.
Ethan heard enough from her face to know something had changed.
Elaine continued.
"And Claire?"
"What?"
"Do not bring Ethan."
The line went dead.
After Lily was safely recovered from the Langham, Claire refused to leave the hotel until she understood exactly how the forged school authorization had passed review.
The school principal joined by phone.
Claire did not threaten anyone.
That surprised the principal, who sounded prepared for a lawsuit.
Instead, Claire asked how a copied form could override the current guardian list.
The answer was painfully ordinary.
A substitute secretary saw an old signature, a familiar family surname, and a confident adult.
No second verification occurred.
Claire looked at Lily and thought about how many disasters began with someone assuming confidence was proof.
She requested policy changes for Lily's school and offered to fund the technology only if the district controlled the vendor selection.
The principal agreed to review procedures immediately.
Ethan stood several feet away listening.
He later told Claire he expected her to threaten to buy the school.
Claire asked whether that was a joke.
Ethan admitted it was a bad one.
Lily interrupted and said Claire could not buy the school because she hated the cafeteria pizza.
For one brief minute, everyone laughed.
Then Lily asked Ethan why Margaret had lied.
He looked at the child who would later turn out to be his sister and said adults sometimes tell themselves they are protecting something when they are really protecting control.
Claire remembered the answer because it sounded too mature for the Ethan who had sat beside Brooke the night before.
She did not trust the change yet.
May you like
But she noticed it.
