Chapter 14 - The Second Betrayal

My mother asked to meet me alone in the garden where she used to grow roses.

I almost refused, but there were questions she could answer that no bank record ever would.

She had brought a folder of old letters.

"Your father was frightened," she began.

"That doesn't explain what he did."

"There were threats.

He believed the business would collapse."

"And what did you believe?"

She stared at the rosebushes.

"I believed keeping the family together mattered more than anything."

I waited.

For once, I wouldn't provide the words she needed.

She opened the folder and revealed an email I'd sent eleven years earlier, asking whether they could attend my commissioning ceremony.

It had never received a reply.

"I saw this," she admitted.

My throat tightened.

"Then you knew."

"I knew you were involved in the military.

I didn't know how important it was."

There was the whole wound, exposed in one sentence.

My life mattered to her only if strangers could be impressed by it.

"You told people I'd quit college and failed," I said.

"Your father said it was safer to keep things simple."

"Safer for whom?"

She began crying.

I did not move to comfort her.

Not because I wanted to punish her, but because my own pain deserved space in the garden too.

"You could have called me," I said.

"I was afraid you wouldn't forgive me."

"So you kept doing the thing that needed forgiving."

A car turned into the driveway.

Ryan stepped out carrying a cardboard box.

He had found more of my letters, unopened, tucked behind tax documents in Dad's filing cabinet.

Mom covered her face.

Ryan set the box on the garden table.

"I think I know why Emily never came home."

He looked at her with an expression I'd never seen him use.

Not anger.

Disappointment.

Our mother stared at the box.

Then she whispered, "Your father told me if you ever found those letters, everything would come apart."

The next envelope contained the one fact that would change the entire inquiry.
