Chapter 11 - The Price of a Reputation

My parents held a gathering for relatives without inviting me.

I heard about it when Aunt Patricia accidentally sent a recording to the same family group chat she had used to ridicule me.

Dad stood in his living room beneath a portrait of himself and Ryan.

"Emily wants attention," he told the room.

"She's taken a successful business dispute and turned it into a scandal."

Mom nodded so vigorously her pearls shifted.

"She has always resented Ryan."

Madison asked whether my rank was even real.

Nobody laughed this time.

Then Ryan spoke from the doorway.

"Her rank is real.

Her career is real.

And you need to stop lying about her."

The recording ended there.

When he called, his voice shook.

"Dad told me to get out."

"Where are you?"

"In my car."

"Find somewhere safe.

Don't drive angry."

He exhaled.

"That's what you said when I wrecked my bike at sixteen."

I remembered bandaging his elbow while Dad shouted about the cost of repairs.

"I was right then too."

He laughed once, miserably.

We met at a diner outside town.

Ryan told me Dad had claimed he'd paid my way into a secret military job through his business contacts.

It was absurd, and yet exactly the kind of absurdity our family could make sound plausible through repetition.

"I believed him for a minute," Ryan admitted.

"Why?"

"Because he's always had the loudest voice in the room."

I stirred coffee I didn't want.

"It's harder to change your mind about someone you love than someone you hate."

He swallowed.

"You still love him?"

I looked out at the highway.

"I remember who I wanted him to be."

Before we left, a diner waitress approached our table.

She held a small envelope someone had asked her to deliver.

There was no return name.

Inside was a copy of an invoice dated two days after Daniel died.

The payment line read: VICTOR CARTER — CONSULTING SUCCESS FEE.

I looked at the amount.

It was larger than my parents' house had cost.

And a handwritten notation beside it said: SILENCE CONFIRMED.
