Chapter 2 — The Truth About Evelyn
For years Adrian had repeated the same story.
"Evelyn came from nothing."
He had believed it because she never corrected him.
Now the attorney placed an old photograph on the table.
It showed a much younger Evelyn standing beside one of the country's most respected business leaders.
"My employer," the attorney said calmly, "is Richard Hale."
Adrian blinked.
The name hit him like ice water.
Richard Hale wasn't a retired accountant.
He had quietly built one of the largest private investment groups in North America before stepping away from public life years earlier.
Very few people had ever seen photographs of him.
Even fewer knew where he lived.
Vanessa whispered,
"...That's impossible."
Evelyn finally spoke.
"My father wanted someone to love me for who I was."
