Chapter 5 – The Shift That Changed Everything
Exactly one year after the fire...
At 2:17 a.m.
Mara stood once again inside Trauma Bay Three.
The same fluorescent lights.
The same monitors.
The same ambulance entrance.
Only this time, the patient was a frightened little girl injured in a highway collision.
Her father stood nearby, terrified.
"Please save her."
Mara knelt beside the child.
She smiled gently.
"We're going to take good care of you."
The surgery lasted nearly four hours.
When it ended, the girl's heartbeat was strong.
Her prognosis was excellent.
As dawn broke, the grateful father approached Mara with tears in his eyes.
"I don't know how to thank you."
She looked toward the brightening horizon beyond the emergency department windows.
"You already did."
He frowned.
"I did?"
"You trusted me."
After he walked away, Dr. Evans stepped beside her.
"Still thinking about last year?"
Mara glanced once at the trauma bay where Grant and Vanessa had unknowingly delivered the evidence that destroyed themselves.
Then she quietly shook her head.
"No."
"I'm thinking about tomorrow."
Outside, the sun rose over Hale Medical Supply and the hospital her father had supported for decades.
Justice had been served.
The company had survived.
Lives continued to be saved.
And Mara finally understood what her father had meant.
