Chapter 1 – The Arrest Before Sunrise
The doors of Trauma Bay Three had barely finished closing when the hospital erupted into controlled chaos.
Detectives from the arson unit arrived less than twenty minutes later.
By then, every burned article of clothing, every receipt, every forged deed, and every page that had spilled from Vanessa's leather case had already been cataloged according to hospital evidence protocol.
Grant watched helplessly from his hospital bed as Detective Collins held up one of the documents.
"Recognize this?"
Grant swallowed.
"No."
"It bears your signature."
"I... I want my lawyer."
Collins nodded without emotion.
"You'll have one."
"But first you'll explain why your fingerprints are on containers of industrial accelerant recovered beside Hale Medical Supply."
Across the hallway, Vanessa sat wrapped in burn dressings while another detective carefully emptied the remaining contents of her ruined document case.
Every envelope contained another crime.
Forged shareholder resolutions.
Fake board minutes.
Hidden offshore bank transfers.
A handwritten checklist labeled:
Warehouse Fire – Friday Night
Vanessa's face drained of color.
"I didn't write that."
The detective quietly produced surveillance photographs from the warehouse loading dock.
Grant.
Vanessa.
The same SUV.
The same gasoline containers.
Timestamped forty-three minutes before the fire.
Neither sibling spoke again.
Meanwhile, Mara finished stitching a teenager's forehead in Exam Room Seven as though nothing extraordinary had happened.
Only after sunrise did Dr. Evans quietly approach her.
"They've both been arrested."
Mara removed her surgical mask.
"I know."
"You knew this would happen?"
She looked through the emergency department windows toward the parking lot where police cruisers waited.
"I knew they would eventually make one mistake too many."
Dr. Evans hesitated.
"You still saved their lives."
Mara smiled faintly.
"I took an oath."
"I never promised to save them from justice."
That afternoon the story exploded across local news.
HEIRS TO MEDICAL COMPANY ARRESTED IN SUSPECTED INSURANCE FRAUD AND ARSON.
Grant's photograph appeared beside the burning warehouse.
Vanessa's followed moments later.
Mara's name appeared only once.
Attending physician preserved evidence according to protocol.
