Chapter 2 — The Board Chooses Its Real Leader
The silence in the foyer lasted only a few seconds.
Then reality arrived.
Daniel lunged toward me, his polished confidence shattered.
"Elena, don't do this."
His hand reached for my arm.
Before he could touch me, my chief legal officer stepped between us.
"I'm afraid you no longer have that privilege, Mr. Carter."
Two members of corporate security entered behind him.
Not the security Daniel had threatened to call.
Mine.
The irony wasn't lost on anyone.
Patricia stood so quickly that her pearl necklace snapped, scattering white beads across the marble floor.
"This is absurd!" she shouted.
"My son runs this company!"
The legal officer calmly opened his leather portfolio.
"He did."
He removed several documents.
"The emergency board meeting concluded nine minutes ago."
Daniel stared.
"No..."
"The board has voted unanimously to remove you as Chief Executive Officer for breach of fiduciary duty, financial misconduct, and failure to disclose conflicts of interest."
Chloe's face drained of color.
"What conflicts?"
The attorney slid another folder onto the coffee table.
Photographs.
Hotel receipts.
Corporate credit card statements.
Private jet manifests.
Every luxury vacation Daniel had taken with Chloe...
Paid for by company funds.
Daniel looked like he had stopped breathing.
"I can explain."
"You'll have every opportunity," the attorney replied.
"In court."
Patricia grabbed the documents with trembling hands.
"This is fabricated!"
"No."
I finally spoke.
"I simply stopped protecting him."
For years, I had quietly corrected his mistakes before anyone noticed.
Covered reckless investments.
Prevented lawsuits.
Negotiated settlements.
The board believed Daniel was a brilliant executive.
They never realized someone else was cleaning up behind him.
Until I stopped.
His empire hadn't collapsed overnight.
It had only survived because I had been holding it together.
May you like
And tonight...
I finally let go.
