Chapter 18 - The Last Board Vote

Tomas stood between Mariana and the only exit.

He did not hold a gun.

He carried a folder.

“Andrew was born in an Escalante hospital,” he said.

“So were thousands of children.”

“His mother gave birth the same night Isabel delivered the twins.”

Mariana looked at the second crib.

“What did you do?”

“I corrected the future.”

Tomas opened the folder.

Two infants had been switched.

The child raised as Andrew Whitmore was Isabel’s missing son.

The child Richard took from the Escalante family had been raised inside the Whitmore mansion.

Mariana felt sick.

“Andrew is my brother?”

“No.”

Tomas smiled.

“The switch was planned.”

“But it never happened.”

He turned the final page.

A nurse had refused to exchange the children.

Richard paid another employee to alter the records so everyone would believe the switch succeeded.

Andrew was Richard and Margaret’s biological child.

Brenda’s mother remained Mariana’s missing twin.

The entire Andrew theory had been another distraction.

“Why preserve the crib?” Mariana asked.

“Because confusion is more powerful than truth.”

Tomas moved closer.

“Your family spent decades protecting bloodlines.”

“I learned that paperwork controls blood more effectively than biology.”

He handed Mariana the folder.

“Tomorrow, the preservation trust holds its emergency vote.”

“Rafael’s shares and Brenda’s heir claim can block you.”

“Unless?”

“Unless you appoint me as permanent trustee.”

Mariana laughed softly.

“You have lost.”

“My mother is safe.”

“Your men are arrested.”

“Your digital system is destroyed.”

Tomas looked at the ceiling.

“You believe the police rescued Isabel because you found her?”

“I allowed them to find her.”

The estate alarm activated.

Smoke began rising from the lower floor.

Tomas had started another fire.

This time, he had locked dozens of officers inside.

Mariana moved toward the fire controls.

Tomas blocked her.

“Sign.”

“No.”

“They will die.”

“You will die with them.”

“I have always been prepared to die.”

“Then you have never understood power.”

Mariana pulled the fire alarm beside the wall.

Nothing happened.

Tomas smiled.

She removed the emerald pendant from her pocket.

Inside was a manual Escalante security transmitter.

Isabel had placed emergency overrides in every family property.

Mariana activated it.

Steel shutters opened throughout the estate.

Fire suppression systems engaged.

Police entered the north wing.

Tomas tried to escape.

Mariana stepped aside.

She did not chase him.

She knew where he would go.

The emergency board meeting began the next morning.

Mariana sat at the head of the table.

Rafael attended through a secure video link.

Brenda sat beside federal prosecutors.

Andrew entered with his injured arm bandaged.

Tomas’s chair remained empty.

The board reviewed the evidence.

The forged authorizations were invalidated.

Rafael agreed to return the stolen voting shares.

Brenda waived any claim based on her unborn child.

Daniel surrendered his certificate for independent review.

Andrew formally resigned from Whitmore Global.

One final vote remained.

The board had to decide whether Mariana would regain control or whether the preservation trust would remain independent.

Before the vote began, the doors opened.

Tomas entered with two federal officers.

He had surrendered voluntarily.

Everyone stared at him.

He smiled toward Mariana.

“You forgot one rule.”

“A trustee under criminal investigation cannot assume control.”

A federal agent approached Mariana.

“Mrs. Escalante, you are under arrest for conspiracy, financial fraud, and the attempted murder of Samuel Voss.”

Andrew stood.

“That is absurd.”

The agent placed Mariana in handcuffs.

Tomas sat in the empty chair.

Then he raised Rafael’s returned voting documents.

“They were transferred to me five minutes before his surrender.”

Rafael looked at the screen in horror.

His father had forged him one final time.

Tomas turned toward the board.

“Shall we vote?”
