Chapter 14 - The Hidden Heir

Daniel survived because the bullet struck the certificate case before entering his shoulder.

The hidden message created a new crisis.

If Mariana was not the true heir, the preservation trust could be challenged.

The sentence had been written in Richard Whitmore’s handwriting.

Mariana brought the document to Samuel Voss.

He examined the ink.

“It is at least twenty-five years old.”

“Who is the true heir?” Mariana asked.

Samuel looked toward Isabel.

Isabel appeared exhausted.

“I hoped this secret would remain buried.”

Alejandro stood beside the hospital window.

“Tell her.”

Isabel faced Mariana.

“You were born with a twin brother.”

Mariana stared at her.

“No.”

“The hospital told us he died.”

“You never told me.”

“You were three days old.”

“We believed there was nothing to tell.”

Samuel opened an old hospital file.

“The infant’s death certificate was forged.”

“Richard Whitmore arranged the adoption.”

Andrew felt the air leave his lungs.

“Adoption by whom?”

Samuel looked at Daniel.

Daniel stopped moving.

“My mother?”

“Richard gave the child to a woman who worked for him.”

Daniel’s face became pale.

“That would make me Mariana’s brother.”

“Possibly.”

Mariana studied Daniel.

He was four years older than her.

The dates did not match.

Samuel continued.

“Your birth records were changed.”

“Daniel was raised believing he was older.”

Daniel laughed weakly.

“My entire identity is a lie.”

Isabel moved toward him.

“I searched for you.”

Daniel stepped back.

“Do not call me your son.”

“I was told you were dead.”

“And when you discovered I was alive?”

“I did not know which child Richard had taken.”

Daniel’s anger rose.

“So you watched all of us.”

“You watched Andrew treat Mariana like property.”

“You watched me serve a family that lied about my father.”

“You watched Rafael become a weapon.”

Isabel’s eyes filled with tears.

“I was trying to identify the heir before Tomas did.”

Mariana looked at the certificate.

“If Daniel is my brother, he has an equal claim.”

Daniel shook his head.

“I do not want your company.”

“That is not the point.”

“It is the only point that matters to me.”

Andrew walked toward the window.

“Why did my father take the child?”

Alejandro answered.

“To create another path into the Escalante trust.”

“If Daniel had married into the family or inherited Whitmore Global, Richard could use him as leverage.”

Andrew turned.

“My father used his own children as financial instruments.”

“So did Tomas,” Mariana said.

Rafael remained under guard in another hospital wing.

Mariana requested to see him.

He sat handcuffed to a chair.

When she mentioned the hidden heir, he smiled.

“My father knew.”

“Is Daniel my brother?”

“No.”

Mariana’s eyes narrowed.

“Samuel verified the records.”

“Samuel verified the records he was given.”

Rafael leaned forward.

“Daniel was the distraction.”

“Then who is the heir?”

Rafael looked through the observation glass.

Brenda stood outside with a lawyer.

Her hand rested protectively against her stomach.

“She contacted police this morning.”

“She claims she is pregnant with Andrew’s child.”

Mariana remained unmoved.

“That does not make her an Escalante.”

“No.”

Rafael smiled.

“But her real name does.”

Brenda entered the room.

Her confidence was gone.

She looked toward Mariana.

“My mother was adopted.”

“I never knew her original family name until Elias found the records.”

She placed a birth certificate on the table.

Her mother’s name was Elena Isabel Escalante.

Isabel gripped the back of a chair.

“That was the name we gave my missing son.”

Brenda looked at her.

“My mother was not your son.”

Rafael laughed softly.

“Richard changed more than the date.”

“He changed the child’s gender.”

Mariana stared at Brenda.

If the documents were genuine, Brenda was the daughter of Mariana’s lost twin.

She was not merely Andrew’s mistress.

She was Mariana’s niece.

And the child she carried could inherit both the Whitmore and Escalante claims.
