Chapter 4 — The Trust No One Could Touch

Two weeks later, the divorce hearing began.

Ryan expected to demand half the estate.

Instead, the judge opened a thick trust document.

Emily's attorney stood.

"The residence, investment portfolio, and family businesses are all protected under the Harrison Family Trust."

Ryan interrupted.

"I'm her husband."

The judge nodded.

"You were."

"But these assets were never marital property."

Ryan's attorney quickly flipped through the documents.

Every page confirmed the same thing.

Emily's father had structured everything years before she married.

There was nothing Ryan could claim.

Not the house.

Not the investments.

Not the rental properties.

Not even the antique collection he'd often called "ours."

Outside the courthouse Ryan finally exploded.

"You planned this from the beginning!"

Emily looked at him quietly.

"No."

"My father simply believed that love and ownership should never be confused."

Ryan had spent years acting like the owner.

Now he walked away with nothing but a suitcase.
