Chapter 6 - The Woman Who Disappeared

Elena Marquez had worked for the Hale family for twenty-seven years.
At least that was what the official employment file said.
Housekeeper.
Personal assistant.
Occasional caregiver for Daniel and Vanessa.
She disappeared nineteen years earlier.
The family had been told she moved to Arizona.
Daniel remembered receiving a postcard.
Elena told us she never sent it.
We followed her through the passage into a small maintenance room behind the old service elevator.
Marcus locked the door behind us.
Daniel stared at Elena as if he were looking at a ghost.
“You used to make pancakes on Sundays.”
Elena gave a broken smile.
“You always wanted chocolate chips.”
Daniel’s eyes filled.
“We thought you left.”
“I had to.”
“Why?”
Elena looked at me.
“Because I saw Vanessa.”
My hand moved instinctively to my stomach.
“At the clinic?”
“No.”
Elena swallowed.
“I saw what happened after.”
Daniel’s face hardened.
“What happened?”
Elena looked at Marcus.
“You were already working security.”
Marcus nodded.
“But Arthur never told me you were alive.”
“He didn’t know for years.”
“How did you get into the house?”
“I never left.”
Silence.
Daniel stared.
“What?”
Elena looked around the hidden maintenance room.
“The old servant corridors connect almost every wing.”
“You lived in the walls?”
“Not exactly.”
“Then where?”
“Arthur helped me later.”
Marcus’s expression changed.
“Arthur knew?”
“Eventually.”
“Why didn’t he tell me?”
“Because he didn’t know who you worked for.”
Marcus looked offended.
Then almost amused.
“Fair.”
Daniel stepped closer.
“Elena.”
She looked at him.
“What happened to Vanessa’s baby?”
Elena began to cry.
“He was born.”
Daniel stumbled backward.
I felt my breath catch.
Vanessa had told Margaret she lost the baby.
She had lied.
Or Richard had forced her to.
“A boy?”
I asked.
Elena nodded.
“Premature.”
“Did he survive?”
“Yes.”
Daniel stared at her.
“Where is he?”
“I don’t know.”
“Who took him?”
“Richard.”
The room went silent.
Elena wiped her face.
“Vanessa was heavily medicated after the delivery.”
“Just like Margaret.”
I whispered.
Elena nodded.
“She kept asking for the baby.”
“What did Richard tell her?”
“That he died.”
Daniel looked sick.
“And he didn’t?”
“No.”
“How do you know?”
“I held him.”
That single sentence changed Vanessa for me.
Not absolved her.
She had still pushed me.
She had still tried to make my fall look accidental.
But suddenly the woman I thought was driven entirely by greed had once been a frightened seventeen-year-old who gave birth to a living son and was told he was dead.
“What happened next?”
Elena looked at me.
“Adrian arrived.”
“The baby’s father?”
“Yes.”
“He knew the child lived?”
“For a few minutes.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“What did Richard do?”
“He had security remove Adrian.”
“Whose security?”
Elena looked toward Marcus.
“Not Hale security.”
Marcus frowned.
“Private contractors?”
“Yes.”
“Names?”
“I never knew.”
“What happened to the baby?”
“Richard took him.”
“Where?”
“I followed them as far as Albany.”
Daniel stared.
“Then?”
“They realized I was behind them.”
Her face changed.
“I barely escaped.”
“Did Richard try to kill you?”
“I don’t know.”
“You don’t know?”
“A truck forced me off the road.”
My stomach tightened.
Another road incident.
Elena continued.
“I went to Arthur.”
“When?”
“Four years later.”
“Why wait?”
“Because I didn’t trust him.”
Daniel frowned.
“He was Vanessa’s father.”
“And Richard’s brother.”
That made sense.
“What changed?”
“Adrian died.”
Elena looked at Daniel.
“Then I knew Richard wasn’t cleaning up one problem.”
“He was protecting something bigger.”
“Yes.”
“Did Arthur believe you?”
“Not at first.”
“But eventually?”
“I had photographs.”
“The ones in the surveillance room?”
“Some.”
Marcus folded his arms.
“Arthur started investigating Richard.”
“Yes.”
“And hired Claire’s father.”
“Yes.”
I stepped closer.
“Did you meet my father?”
Elena looked at me for a long time.
“Thomas Bennett?”
My chest tightened.
“Yes.”
Her eyes softened.
“He saved my life.”
I wasn’t prepared for that.
“What?”
“When Richard found out Arthur had outside help, he started searching for me again.”
“You were still living under a false name?”
“Yes.”
“Dad helped you?”
“He moved me.”
“Where?”
“Several places.”
“Did he ever tell you what he found?”
Elena hesitated.
“A trust account.”
“What account?”
“One Arthur didn’t know existed.”
“How much?”
“Hundreds of millions.”
Daniel stared.
“That isn’t possible.”
“It is.”
“Where did the money come from?”
“Hale Holdings.”
Marcus swore under his breath.
Elena looked at me.
“Your father believed Richard had been siphoning money for more than twenty years.”
“Then why kill Adrian?”
“Because Adrian discovered more than the pregnancy.”
“What?”
“His father.”
“Julian Cross?”
“Yes.”
Daniel stiffened.
“What did Julian do?”
“Julian drafted documents for Richard.”
“The amended will.”
“Among other things.”
“Did Adrian know?”
“He found files in Julian’s office.”
“What kind?”
“Payments.”
“To whom?”
“Doctors.”
My mind went immediately to Margaret.
Elena nodded as if she could see the thought.
“Dr. Wynn was one.”
“Who else?”
“Judges.”
Daniel whispered a curse.
“Board members.”
Marcus looked grim.
“And?”
Elena’s voice dropped.
“Adoption agencies.”
Nobody moved.
My skin went cold.
“The baby.”
Elena nodded.
“Richard didn’t just hide Vanessa’s son.”
“He sold the identity.”
Daniel frowned.
“What does that mean?”
“He created records showing a different child had died.”
“And Vanessa’s baby?”
“Given another name.”
“To whom?”
“I don’t know.”
“Adopted?”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
“I don’t know.”
Daniel pressed both hands against his head.
“I have a nephew.”
“Yes.”
“He would be nineteen.”
“Twenty.”
Daniel looked at me.
“Twenty.”
Elena nodded.
“He turned twenty in February.”
I saw something in her expression.
“You know more.”
She looked away.
“Elena.”
“I promised Arthur.”
“Arthur is dead.”
“I know.”
“And Richard may still be trying to kill people.”
She closed her eyes.
Then nodded.
“There is a name.”
Daniel stepped closer.
“What name?”
“Not his current name.”
“What name?”
“The name Richard used in the original adoption file.”
Elena walked toward an old metal cabinet.
She pulled out a folder.
Inside was a photocopied birth record.
Mother.
Vanessa Hale.
Father.
Adrian Cross.
Male child.
Born February 14.
The infant’s temporary name had been typed below.
Baby Hale.
Then crossed out.
Under it was another name.
Evan Reed.
Marcus made a sound behind us.
I turned.
He had gone completely pale.
“What?”
Daniel asked.
Marcus stared at the document.
“Elena.”
She looked at him sadly.
“You recognize it.”
Marcus stepped back.
“No.”
Daniel grabbed his arm.
“What is it?”
Marcus looked at us.
His voice barely worked.
“My son is named Evan.”
The room became silent.
I stared at him.
“How old is he?”
Marcus didn’t answer.
He didn’t have to.
Elena did.
“Twenty.”
Marcus looked at her.
“No.”
“He was adopted.”
“No.”
“Marcus.”
“My wife and I adopted him through a private agency.”
Elena closed her eyes.
Daniel whispered.
“Oh my God.”
Marcus pulled out his phone with shaking hands.
He found a photograph.
A young man stood beside him.
Dark hair.
Angular face.
Familiar eyes.
The same eyes Adrian Cross had in the clinic photograph.
Marcus stared at the image.
Then at the birth record.
“My son is Vanessa’s child.”
Before anyone could respond, Marcus’s phone rang.
Evan.
Marcus answered instantly.
“Evan?”
There was heavy breathing.
Then a voice.
Not Evan’s.
Male.
Calm.
Older.
“Marcus.”
Marcus’s face changed.
May you like
Richard Hale continued.
“I think it’s time we discuss what belongs to whom.”
