Chapter 11 - Arthur’s Daughter

Elena didn’t ask us to forgive her for hiding the truth.

She didn’t apologize.

She simply sat down and told us why.

Her daughter had been born twenty-three years earlier.

Three years before Vanessa’s son.

Arthur named her Grace.

Elena used another name.

Sophie Marquez.

For the first four years of Sophie’s life, Arthur secretly supported them.

Not because he was ashamed of the child.

Because he was terrified of Richard.

“He knew what the trust said.”

Elena explained.

“The first grandchild triggered an audit.”

Daniel stared.

“Sophie wasn’t a grandchild.”

“No.”

“But she changed inheritance.”

“Yes.”

Arthur’s original family trust contained another clause.

Any biological child he acknowledged became an equal beneficiary.

That would dilute Richard’s influence over Hale Holdings.

More importantly, it would expose old transfers made through entities Richard had controlled.

Arthur had intended to acknowledge Sophie publicly.

He never did.

“What stopped him?”

I asked.

Elena looked at Daniel.

“Richard.”

“What did he do?”

“He showed Arthur photographs of me and Sophie.”

“Threatened you?”

“Yes.”

“With what?”

“Everything.”

Elena pressed her hands together.

“Arthur sent us away.”

Daniel looked sick.

“Where is Sophie?”

Elena didn’t answer.

“Elena.”

“She died.”

My chest tightened.

“When?”

“She was eleven.”

“How?”

“Leukemia.”

Daniel lowered his eyes.

“I am sorry.”

Elena nodded.

“Arthur visited her three times during treatment.”

“Did Margaret know?”

“No.”

“Vanessa?”

“No.”

“Richard?”

“Yes.”

Of course.

Richard knew everything.

Daniel sat back.

“So Sophie has nothing to do with the current messages.”

Elena looked at him.

“I didn’t say that.”

He frowned.

“You said she’s dead.”

“She is.”

“Then what?”

Elena’s voice became quieter.

“She had a son.”

The room stopped.

“What?”

I whispered.

“She was eleven.”

“Not when she became a mother.”

I stared.

“I thought you said she died at eleven.”

Elena looked confused.

Then realization crossed her face.

“No.”

“She was diagnosed at eleven.”

“She survived?”

“For nine years.”

My pulse quickened.

“She died at twenty.”

“Yes.”

“Her son?”

Elena began crying.

“Born six months before she died.”

Daniel stood.

“My father had a grandson.”

“Yes.”

“Where is he?”

Elena looked at Marcus.

“Protected.”

“By whom?”

“I don’t know anymore.”

Daniel laughed in disbelief.

“How many secret children does this family have?”

“Too many.”

I whispered.

That explained the messages.

Maybe.

Arthur’s grandson would be three years younger than Evan.

Around nineteen.

Another hidden heir.

Another person whose existence threatened control of the company.

“What is his name?”

I asked.

Elena shook her head.

“Arthur chose a guardian.”

“Who?”

“I promised never to say.”

“Elena.”

“Claire, I have buried a daughter.”

Her voice cracked.

“I will not bury her son.”

That ended the argument.

For the moment.

Detective Cole brought Richard to the mansion under supervision.

Not arrest.

Interview.

Richard entered the library wearing a navy coat.

He looked exhausted.

Not frightened.

Margaret had been discharged and arrived shortly afterward.

The reunion between brother-in-law and widow was icy.

Richard looked at her.

“Margaret.”

She didn’t answer.

He noticed how much steadier she looked without the medication.

That frightened him more than any police officer.

“You knew.”

Margaret said.

“About what?”

“Vanessa.”

Richard looked away.

“You knew she was pregnant.”

“Yes.”

“You told me she was in France.”

“You were ill.”

“You drugged me.”

“No.”

“You had Wynn drug me.”

Richard’s jaw tightened.

“I was trying to stabilize you.”

“You stole my daughter from me.”

“Vanessa asked for my help.”

“She was seventeen.”

“Yes.”

“She was terrified.”

“Yes.”

“And you told her baby had died.”

Richard’s eyes shifted.

Margaret slapped him.

One sharp strike.

The room went silent.

Richard didn’t move.

Margaret’s voice was shaking.

“You will never tell me again that you were protecting this family.”

Richard slowly touched his cheek.

Then looked at me.

“Claire.”

“Don’t.”

“You are making a mistake.”

“I’ve heard that before.”

“You think I am the enemy.”

“You threatened Marcus’s son.”

“No.”

“You called him.”

“Yes.”

“And pretended you had Evan.”

“Yes.”

Marcus took a step forward.

“Why?”

Richard looked at him.

“Because I needed to know what Claire had found.”

“You used my son.”

“I used your fear.”

Marcus’s hands curled into fists.

Detective Cole moved slightly closer.

Richard continued.

“I knew someone else had Evan.”

“Who?”

I asked.

Richard looked at Margaret.

“That is why I asked for her.”

Margaret crossed her arms.

“Speak.”

Richard inhaled.

“Arthur.”

Nobody moved.

Daniel laughed once.

“My father is dead.”

Richard looked at him.

“Yes.”

“He died four years ago.”

“Yes.”

“Then what are you saying?”

Richard’s eyes moved toward the chandelier camera.

“Arthur created a contingency network before his death.”

Marcus frowned.

“People?”

“People.”

“Who?”

“I don’t know all of them.”

“You expect us to believe that?”

Richard looked at me.

“Thomas Bennett was one.”

My father.

“Marcus was another, although Arthur never told Marcus the full plan.”

Marcus said nothing.

“Elena.”

Richard continued.

“Several board members.”

“And whoever is messaging me?”

“Yes.”

“Who?”

Richard looked directly at Margaret.

“Someone Arthur trusted more than any of us.”

Margaret’s face changed.

“Who?”

Richard spoke a name.

“Samuel.”

Daniel frowned.

“Samuel who?”

Margaret sat down.

Her hands started shaking again.

“My brother.”

Daniel stared.

“You have a brother?”

Margaret looked at him.

“I had a brother.”

Richard shook his head.

“No.”

Margaret looked at him.

Richard continued.

“You still do.”

The room became silent.

“My brother died when I was nineteen.”

“That is what your father told you.”

Margaret’s lips parted.

“What are you talking about?”

Richard smiled without warmth.

“Samuel has been alive for forty-seven years.”

“Where?”

“He has been watching.”

My skin prickled.

“The cameras?”

Richard nodded.

“Some of them.”

“Why?”

“Because Samuel Hale is the person Arthur intended to give control of the trust if anything happened to Margaret.”

Daniel stared.

“Our family has an uncle nobody told us existed?”

Richard looked at him.

“Not an uncle.”

“What?”

Richard turned toward Margaret.

“You were adopted.”

Margaret’s face went blank.

Nobody spoke.

Richard continued.

“Samuel isn’t your brother.”

May you like

He paused.

“He is Arthur’s.”
