Chapter 9 - THE KEY WITH MY NAME ON IT

For several seconds, I thought I had misunderstood my father.

"Me?"

"Your biometric profile is registered as an emergency delegate."

"I have never used it."

"I know."

"Then someone copied it."

My father did not answer immediately.

Rachel asked the question he was avoiding.

"What does the access log show?"

He opened the secure message from his chief financial officer.

The treasury system recorded an emergency authorization from my delegate credential at 12:41 a.m.

That was while I was still inside the mansion.

The credential had been paired with my father's hardware token from his private office in London.

Two factors from two countries.

Used in the same transaction.

"That's impossible," I said.

"Technically, no," my father replied.

"It requires preparation."

"How much preparation?"

"Enough that this did not begin last night."

My mind returned to my foundation laptop.

Adrian's IT department had possessed it for a full day.

My stored signature had been copied.

A fake video had used my passport information.

Now my emergency banking credential had been used in a fraudulent transfer.

Someone had not just stolen pieces of my identity.

They had built a working version of me.

"Audit me," I said.

My father frowned.

"What?"

"Every device, every account, every login, every physical access record."

"Lena, no one here thinks you did this."

"Regulators will."

Rachel nodded slowly.

"She's right."

My father looked unhappy.

"Voluntary disclosure creates exposure."

"Hiding it creates more."

I held his gaze.

"Call the regulators before Malcolm does."

He did.

By 3:00 p.m., Rowan Global had notified banking authorities in the United States, Britain, and Switzerland that an unauthorized treasury transfer had used compromised executive credentials.

My father placed the affected systems under independent forensic review.

He also temporarily surrendered his own transfer authority to a three-person committee.

The financial press noticed within twenty minutes.

ROWAN GLOBAL RESTRICTS TREASURY ACCESS AMID CYBERSECURITY INCIDENT.

The gossip article about my marriage was no longer the biggest story.

That did not make me feel better.

It meant Vanessa and Malcolm had succeeded in widening the blast radius.

At 3:34 p.m., Adrian called Rachel instead of me.

He offered information.

In return, he wanted Rowan Credit to stop the lender default process and the board to restore his building access.

Rachel put the request on speaker.

"What information?" she asked.

Adrian sounded exhausted.

"I know how they cloned Lena's credentials."

I leaned forward.

Rachel's eyes narrowed.

"How?"

"Not over the phone."

"Then you have nothing to bargain with."

"I have the original device."

My father looked at me.

"What device?" Rachel asked.

"A security key Vanessa gave me."

"Where is it?"

"Somewhere she cannot reach."

"Why did she give it to you?"

Adrian went silent.

I knew that silence now.

It meant the answer would make him look worse.

"Ask him what he thought it was for," I said.

Rachel repeated the question.

Adrian exhaled.

"She said it could duplicate executive credentials for testing."

My stomach turned.

"And you accepted it?"

"Vale Meridian builds security products."

"You accepted a device designed to copy credentials from your mistress?"

"I was testing a vulnerability."

"Whose credential did you test?"

Silence.

My father stood up.

"Adrian."

His voice had changed.

"Answer my daughter."

Adrian spoke quietly.

"Lena's."

The room disappeared around me for a moment.

"When?"

"Three months ago."

That was when my laptop had been taken for the supposed password repair.

"You cloned my credential."

"I did not know what she planned to do with it."

"You still did it."

"Vanessa told me it was harmless."

I almost could not believe the sentence.

"You believed her."

"I believed it was a security demonstration."

"Using your wife's private credential without permission."

"I made a mistake."

The phrase was so small compared with the act that it made me furious.

"A mistake is sending an email to the wrong person."

"Lena."

"You copied my identity."

"I didn't use it."

"You gave someone else the ability to."

My father took the phone from Rachel.

"Where is the device?"

Adrian's voice hardened.

"Restore my access first."

"No."

"Then you don't get it."

"You are attempting to bargain with evidence of a felony investigation."

"I am protecting myself from a man trying to destroy me."

My father replied quietly.

"You are protecting the people who already destroyed you."

The call ended.

For the next hour, police worked to obtain legal authority to recover the device.

Adrian had not been arrested, but now his admission placed him inside the credential theft chain.

Rachel urged me not to contact him.

I agreed.

Then, at 4:51 p.m., my phone received a photograph from an unknown number.

It showed a small black hardware key resting on a diner table.

Beside it was that day's newspaper.

A message followed.

COME ALONE AND YOU GET THE ORIGINAL.

I showed Daniel immediately.

He traced the number to a prepaid phone.

The diner in the photograph was recognizable from its red tabletop and old chrome napkin holder.

It was twenty minutes away.

"You are not going alone," Daniel said.

"I know."

"You are not going at all."

"If Adrian has the device, police need it."

"Police can obtain it without using you as bait."

I stared at the photograph.

Something was wrong.

Adrian never ate at diners.

He hated fluorescent lighting, paper napkins, and any restaurant where a server called him honey.

Vanessa knew that because she used to tease him about it.

"Adrian didn't send this."

Daniel leaned closer.

"Why not?"

"The location."

The next message arrived.

TEN MINUTES.

Then another.

YOUR FATHER'S NEXT TRANSFER WILL NOT BE REVERSIBLE.

This was not a meeting invitation.

It was pressure.

I called Detective Price.

Police went to the diner without me.

The table in the photograph was empty.

Underneath it, taped behind the metal support, they found the hardware key.

No one approached.

No one demanded anything.

The entire threat had been designed to make me leave a secure location and travel toward a predictable route.

"Why?" I asked.

Daniel requested traffic data from the roads between the hospital and diner.

Police found the answer twenty-three minutes later.

A delivery truck had been parked illegally beside the eastbound tunnel.

Inside were two men with fake security credentials, restraints, and a photograph of me.

They claimed they knew nothing about Vanessa or Malcolm.

One phone contained a single encrypted instruction.

TAKE THE DAUGHTER.

My father read it once.

Then he quietly ordered every member of his security team to treat me as the primary target.

I looked at him.

"No."

"This is not negotiable."

"Then make it negotiable."

"Two men were waiting to abduct you."

"Which means hiding me is exactly what they expect."

"I am not using you as bait."

"Neither am I."

I pointed to the recovered hardware key on the evidence photograph.

"I am going to find out what Adrian knows before someone else decides for me."

Rachel interrupted.

"There may be a way to do that without physical contact."

"How?"

"The board meets tonight."

Adrian had demanded permission to attend remotely.

The board chair had not yet decided.

I understood what Rachel was suggesting.

"Let him attend."

My father frowned.

"Why?"

"Because if Adrian thinks he still has a path back to his company, he will talk."

May you like

I looked at the man who had built empires by making other people reveal what they wanted.

"And this time, Dad, you let me ask the questions."
