Chapter 11 - VANESSA CROSS WAS NOT HER NAME

The irony should have satisfied me.

It did not.

Watching Adrian confront a forged signature did not erase what he had done with mine.

It only forced him into a reality he had dismissed when I described it.

"Now you understand," I said.

He looked at me through the screen.

For once, there was no argument in his face.

The board ordered independent verification of every transfer certificate filed in the previous year.

The special shareholder meeting was delayed pending authentication.

Argent's lawyers threatened immediate litigation.

My father welcomed it.

"Discovery will be useful," he said.

The meeting ended at 9:23 p.m.

I was finally discharged from the hospital shortly before ten.

Daniel moved me to a secure apartment owned by a Rowan subsidiary.

I hated that I needed protection.

I hated even more that the threat was real enough to make refusing it foolish.

The apartment overlooked the river from forty floors up.

My father offered to stay.

I told him to go sleep.

He refused.

I compromised by letting him take the guest room.

At 11:10 p.m., Rachel arrived with a folder.

"We identified Vanessa."

I stared at her.

"We already know who she is."

"No."

Rachel sat across from me.

"We know who Vanessa Cross says she is."

She placed a birth certificate on the table.

The name printed at the top was Vanessa Elise Price.

Father: Malcolm Everett Price.

Mother: Caroline Cross.

I read it twice.

"She's his daughter."

"Yes."

The room seemed to narrow.

Vanessa had spent months at my table while hiding the single relationship that explained almost everything.

"Why use Cross?"

"Her parents divorced when she was six."

"Did she legally change it?"

"At eighteen."

"Why is there almost nothing online?"

"Because Malcolm spent a lot of money keeping his family out of public databases after a kidnapping threat years ago."

I almost laughed at the symmetry.

Two daughters of powerful fathers.

Both deliberately difficult to trace.

One had hidden her identity to protect a marriage from money.

The other had hidden hers to enter that marriage.

My father stood in the doorway.

He had clearly not been sleeping.

"I met her once."

I looked at him.

"When?"

"She was a child."

He sat down.

"Malcolm brought his family to a company retreat before our relationship deteriorated."

"Would she remember you?"

"Probably."

"Would she remember me?"

He thought about it.

"You were not there."

Rachel slid another document forward.

"Vanessa's employment history is fabricated after age twenty-six."

"What did she do before that?"

"Price Capital special projects."

"Meaning?"

"Corporate intelligence, due diligence, competitive research."

I thought of all the questions Vanessa had asked over the months.

Where did I spend holidays?

Did my father still live abroad?

Did Adrian and I keep separate finances?

Was I involved in Vale Meridian's board matters?

At the time, they sounded like intimate questions from a woman trying to become my friend.

Now they sounded like discovery.

"She studied me."

My father nodded.

"Yes."

"Before she seduced Adrian."

"Most likely."

That was somehow more humiliating.

Adrian had believed Vanessa chose him because he was irresistible.

She may have chosen him because he was useful.

Rachel received a call from investigators.

They had recovered partial location data from the burner phone left in Vanessa's escape car.

It connected repeatedly to towers near Vale Meridian headquarters, our mansion, Marcus Bell's apartment, and one other location.

A private fertility clinic.

I stared at Rachel.

"Pregnancy."

"Possibly."

"Can we verify whether she is actually pregnant?"

"Not without medical records we have no right to access."

"Then why the clinic?"

"We can only speculate."

I did not need to.

The pregnancy had been too perfectly timed.

A final emotional blow before the signature.

Whether it was real or fake, it had functioned as part of the pressure.

At midnight, Adrian sent me an email.

Rachel advised me to preserve it and not respond.

I read it anyway.

Lena,

I know nothing I say can excuse what I did to you.

I believed Vanessa when she said you had been insulting her for months, leaking company information to your father, and planning to leave me after forcing me out of Vale Meridian.

I believed her because she showed me messages and recordings.

I understand now that some of them may have been altered.

But I still chose what I did.

I am not asking you to forgive me.

I am asking you to understand that Malcolm used both of us.

I know where Vanessa keeps a second archive.

If I give it to police, it may expose everything.

There is one condition.

Do not let your father buy Vale Meridian in the restructuring.

I read the final sentence twice.

Even now, Adrian was bargaining.

Even now, he feared my father owning his company more than he feared losing me.

I showed the message to Elias.

He read it and handed the phone back.

"What do you want to do?"

The question mattered.

He did not tell me what he would do.

He asked me.

"I want the archive."

"Then police should retrieve it."

"Agreed."

"And his condition?"

I looked through the glass at the city lights.

"You will not buy Vale Meridian."

My father raised an eyebrow.

"You are ordering me not to make an investment?"

"I am asking you not to turn my divorce into an acquisition strategy."

He considered that.

"Fair."

The next morning, Adrian gave Detective Price the archive location.

It was a rented climate-controlled unit beneath a luxury apartment building.

The lease was in Vanessa's name.

Police obtained a warrant.

Inside were six encrypted drives, printed financial models, copies of my trust documents, surveillance photographs of my father, and a wall calendar containing dates going back nine months.

One date was circled in red.

Our wedding anniversary.

Beside it Vanessa had written, TARGET SIGNATURE WINDOW.

Another date was circled two weeks later.

Beside that she had written, PLAN B - PUBLIC COLLAPSE.

Then Detective Price found a photograph taped inside a folder.

It showed Malcolm Price standing beside Vanessa at a private marina.

On the back was a handwritten note.

If Rowan discovers who I am, use Adrian's resentment.

Below that was a second sentence.

He already suspects the marriage is the reason Rowan keeps saving him.

I read it slowly.

"Adrian suspected?"

My father looked at me.

That was not what Adrian had told the board.

He claimed he had no idea I was connected to Rowan.

But Vanessa's note suggested he had been closer to the truth than he admitted.

The question was how close.

And how long he had known.
