Chapter 7 - SOMEONE WAS WEARING MY NAME

The authorization bore my digital signature.

It also used my newly exercised voting credentials from CBL Holdings.

Credentials that had existed for less than four hours.

I stared at the screen in Samuel's office while three lawyers and two forensic accountants tried to explain how impossible it should have been.

"Only Samuel, me, and the transfer agent had the activation package."

My father stood at the end of the conference table.

"And Elena."

Samuel shook his head.

"Elena never received the administrative key."

"Then someone inside the transfer agent did."

One of the forensic accountants looked up.

"Or someone intercepted the package before delivery."

Detective Brooks entered carrying a folder.

"We may know who."

She placed a still image on the table.

Selene stood at a bank counter wearing a dark coat and large sunglasses.

The timestamp was one hour earlier.

"Where is this?"

"North River Private Bank."

My father swore.

"CBL banks there."

Detective Brooks nodded.

"She presented identification in Elena's name."

"The counterfeit from the station."

"A better version."

"Did the bank give her access?"

"Not directly."

Samuel frowned.

"Then what did she do there?"

Detective Brooks opened the folder.

"She collected a sealed courier envelope addressed to Elena Blackwood."

The room went silent.

Samuel slowly sat down.

"The activation package."

"It appears so."

I looked at him.

"Why was it sitting at a bank counter?"

"It was supposed to be held for verified pickup by your designated representative."

"Who designated the representative?"

Samuel's face tightened.

"The instruction was submitted electronically."

"By whom?"

"Me."

He looked genuinely disturbed.

"Except I did not send it."

My father reached for the document.

"Show me the metadata."

"Already being pulled."

The larger pattern became impossible to ignore.

Someone had access inside my father's legal team.

Someone knew exactly when I converted the shares.

Someone knew where the activation credentials would be created.

Someone had prepared Selene with a counterfeit identity before any of us knew we would need those credentials.

This was not improvisation.

Nathan had planned for my father to fight back.

Maybe he had even planned for me to reveal myself.

"The four hundred and twelve million," I said.

"Where did it go?"

The accountant brought up a transaction map.

"Six intermediate accounts."

"Final destination?"

"We do not know yet."

"Freeze them."

"Three are offshore."

"Freeze what you can."

My father pointed at the screen.

"Call every correspondent bank."

Detective Brooks interrupted.

"No one makes another call until law enforcement has the account list."

My father turned.

"Every minute matters."

"So does not tipping off the people on the other end."

I put both hands on the table.

"Do both."

They looked at me.

"Detective, take the list first."

I turned to my father.

"Then the banks get called through counsel with preservation and fraud notices."

Samuel nodded.

"That works."

My father said nothing.

For years, he had made decisions and I had watched.

Now I had made one in his room and everyone moved.

The realization did not feel triumphant.

It felt overdue.

At 5:40 p.m., police located Peter Hale unharmed.

The photograph sent to Marcus had been taken by a private investigator hired through a shell company.

Marcus gave a full statement.

He admitted the old cover-up involving his son.

He admitted his votes had been coerced.

He admitted Nathan had instructed him to protect Julian for forty-eight hours.

Then he did something Julian did not expect.

He called Thomas Armitage and changed his vote.

A new board meeting was scheduled for six thirty.

Julian appeared by video again.

This time, he looked less polished.

His tie was gone.

There was a shadow of stubble along his jaw.

He knew Marcus had flipped before the chairman said a word.

"This meeting is invalid."

Thomas ignored him.

"A motion has been made to suspend Mr. Vale as chief executive pending completion of the internal investigation."

Julian leaned toward the camera.

"Marcus, you know what happens if you do this."

Marcus sat beside me.

His face was pale, but he did not look away.

"Yes."

"Think about Peter."

Marcus swallowed.

"I am."

Julian smiled.

"Good."

Marcus's voice shook once.

Then steadied.

"I am thinking about how I taught my son that powerful men can erase consequences."

Julian's smile disappeared.

"I am done teaching him that."

The vote began.

Director by director, the results appeared.

Yes.

Yes.

Abstain.

Yes.

No.

Yes.

The supermajority threshold was reached with one vote to spare.

Thomas removed his glasses.

"Effective immediately, Julian Vale is suspended as chief executive officer of Vale Meridian."

No one celebrated.

Julian sat perfectly still.

Then he looked directly into his camera.

I knew he was looking at me.

"You think this ends with a vote?"

"No."

I leaned closer to my screen.

"I think it starts with one."

His mouth curved.

"Ask your father what happens when Orion triggers tomorrow night."

My father stiffened.

Julian noticed.

"There it is."

He laughed.

"He did not tell you that part, did he?"

"I know about Orion."

That surprised him.

Only for a second.

"Then you know your thirty-one percent will be worth pennies if the lender takes the logistics assets."

"Nathan's lender."

Julian's eyes changed.

There.

A reaction.

"What did you say?"

"Nathan Cross."

Julian looked offscreen.

Not fear.

Confusion.

Real confusion.

"Nathan has nothing to do with Orion."

Marcus stared at him.

I felt the room tighten.

"Who told you that?"

Julian's voice became cautious.

"Orion is funded by Westbridge Consortium."

Samuel opened his laptop.

"Westbridge's beneficial ownership is obscured through five jurisdictions."

Julian looked irritated.

"It is a pension-backed credit group."

My father spoke for the first time.

"That is what Nathan wanted you to believe."

Julian laughed.

"Victor, you are getting desperate."

My father did not blink.

"Nathan controls Westbridge."

Julian's face became blank.

He looked toward someone outside the camera again.

Then he disconnected.

The meeting ended minutes later.

We had won the vote.

But the company still had less than thirty hours before the Orion covenant could trigger.

And someone had already moved four hundred and twelve million dollars in my name.

At seven twelve, Detective Brooks received a call from the bank fraud team.

They had traced the first offshore transfer.

The receiving company was registered in Cyprus.

Its owner was another holding company in Luxembourg.

That company was controlled by a trust in the Cayman Islands.

The beneficiary was hidden.

But a signatory had been listed on one document filed years earlier.

Detective Brooks printed the page and placed it in front of me.

The name was not Nathan Cross.

It was Julian Vale.

Below his name was a second authorized signatory.

Elena Catherine Blackwood.

My signature appeared beside it.

The document was dated eighteen months before I had ever heard of the company.

Then Samuel noticed the witness line.

He went completely still.

"Victor."

My father stepped closer.

May you like

The witness signature belonged to someone both men knew.

Samuel Price.
