Chapter 17 - THE HUSBAND WHO FINALLY WANTED MERCY

Julian was placed in an interview room at the federal building just after midnight.
He was not under arrest yet.
He was there voluntarily, which he reminded everyone of twice before I entered.
Detective Brooks sat near the wall.
A federal prosecutor named Aaron Cole sat beside her.
Julian's attorney occupied the chair closest to him.
I had my own counsel now because Samuel was representing CBL and could no longer advise every person in the widening case.
Her name was Rachel Kim.
She had spent the drive downtown telling me one thing repeatedly.
"Do not promise him anything."
I did not intend to.
Julian stood when I entered.
For one strange second, habit almost made me respond the way I always had.
Smile.
Cross the room.
Let him touch my hand.
Six years of marriage lived in the body even after the mind understood what the marriage had been.
I sat across from him instead.
He looked at the bruising still visible near my wrist.
His eyes moved away.
That was the closest thing to shame I had seen from him.
"You came."
"You said you had evidence."
His attorney leaned forward.
"Mr. Vale is prepared to cooperate fully regarding Nathan Cross and associated financial offenses."
Rachel spoke before I could.
"In exchange for what?"
"A recommendation that prosecutors consider his assistance."
Aaron Cole folded his hands.
"We have made no promises."
Julian looked at me.
"But you can ask them."
"I can."
Hope appeared in his face.
"I will not."
It vanished.
"Elena."
"No."
"You have not even heard what I have."
"Evidence does not purchase forgiveness from me."
"I am not asking for forgiveness."
"Then stop looking at me like I am the person who can save you."
His jaw tightened.
For a moment, the old Julian returned.
The one who treated resistance as disrespect.
Then he remembered where he was.
"I can prove Nathan planned this before I met you."
"Then prove it."
"And I get nothing?"
Detective Brooks spoke calmly.
"You get the opportunity to tell the truth before we prove it without you."
Julian laughed once.
"You people really know how to sell a deal."
Aaron Cole opened a folder.
"We already have payment records showing Nathan-linked entities paid you after your engagement and marriage."
Julian stopped laughing.
"We have evidence of forged CBL transfers."
Aaron continued.
"We have your hidden archive."
"We have recordings from your home."
"We have Selene Laurent's statement."
Julian looked toward his attorney.
The attorney's expression did not help him.
Aaron closed the folder.
"So the question is not whether you can buy your way out."
"The question is whether you want to be useful before the evidence makes you unnecessary."
Julian looked at me again.
"Selene is lying to protect herself."
"Probably."
That answer surprised him.
"She lies as easily as you do."
I leaned forward.
"The difference is that I no longer need either of you to be good people."
"I only need the evidence to be true."
He stared at me for several seconds.
Then he reached slowly into his jacket.
Detective Brooks immediately stood.
Julian froze.
His attorney raised both hands.
"He has a storage device."
Julian removed a metal cufflink and placed it on the table.
It looked ordinary.
He twisted the back.
A tiny connector appeared.
"Nathan gave me that six years ago."
"Why keep it?"
I asked.
"Because I stopped trusting him three years ago."
"But you kept stealing with him."
"Yes."
"Interesting definition of distrust."
Julian's mouth tightened.
A technician collected the device and connected it to an isolated computer.
The drive contained audio files.
Dozens of them.
Julian had recorded Nathan without his knowledge.
The earliest file was dated two months before Julian and I met.
We listened.
Nathan's voice was unmistakable.
"Victor's daughter does not know what Catherine left her."
Julian answered.
"Why does that matter to me?"
"Because one day she could control the credit platform behind half your father's company."
A younger Julian laughed.
"You want me to marry a stranger for a financing agreement?"
"I want you to meet her."
"And if she hates me?"
Nathan paused.
"She will not."
"How do you know?"
"Because Victor taught her to distrust men who look powerful."
"So do not look powerful."
The recording ended.
I felt physically cold.
Nathan had designed Julian's first impression of me.
The modest suit.
The rented car.
The story about building himself from nothing.
The careful disinterest in my family name.
Even his supposed humility had been rehearsed.
"Did you know he was sending you after me?"
Julian stared at the table.
"Yes."
"Did you know about the call right?"
"Not then."
"What did you think I had?"
"A trust."
"How much?"
"I did not know."
"But enough to marry me for access."
He looked up.
"At first."
I almost laughed.
"At first?"
"I did love you."
The room went silent.
Rachel glanced at me.
I raised one hand to show I was fine.
"Do not say that."
"It is true."
"No."
"Elena-"
"You do not get to rename possession as love because consequences arrived."
His eyes flashed.
"You think every year was fake?"
"I think you made sure I could never know which parts were real."
That landed.
He looked away.
Aaron asked the technician to play another file.
The date was eight months after our wedding.
Nathan was speaking.
"She trusts you now."
Julian answered.
"She always trusted me."
"That is not the same thing."
"What do you want?"
"Access to CBL correspondence."
"Her father handles it."
"Then make her resent him."
A pause.
"How?"
Nathan's answer was quiet.
"You are her husband."
"Figure it out."
The recording ended.
I remembered that year vividly.
Julian had begun pointing out every disagreement with my father.
He told me Victor did not respect my adulthood.
He told me my father used money to keep me dependent.
Some of those criticisms had contained truth.
That was why they worked.
Julian never built a lie from nothing.
He found a real crack and widened it until the relationship broke.
For almost two years, I barely spoke to my father except on holidays.
Julian gained access to correspondence during that period because I asked Samuel to route household financial notices through my husband.
I had delivered the key myself.
"You isolated me from him for Nathan."
Julian's voice was barely audible.
"Yes."
"And from my friends?"
He did not answer.
"My work?"
Silence.
"The charity board you convinced me to leave?"
"Elena-"
"Answer me."
"Yes."
I nodded slowly.
The confession hurt differently from the assault.
The physical pain had been immediate and undeniable.
This pain reached backward.
It entered old memories and changed their meaning.
Every time Julian had said he wanted more time with me.
Every time he criticized a friend as a bad influence.
Every time he said a job would stress me unnecessarily.
He had called it love while making my world smaller.
Aaron played another file.
This one was dated the week before the assault.
Nathan's voice sounded irritated.
"You are losing control of her."
Julian answered.
"She suspects Selene."
"Then end Selene."
"I cannot yet."
"Why?"
"She has copies."
"Of what?"
"The ledger."
There was a long pause.
Then Nathan spoke.
"That was careless."
Julian cursed.
"She went through my safe."
"And Elena?"
"Elena is asking questions about CBL."
Nathan's reply was the sentence that changed the room.
"Then frighten her badly enough that she stops asking."
The audio ended.
My hands were cold.
Detective Brooks looked at Julian.
"Is that why you assaulted her?"
Julian did not answer.
His attorney whispered to him.
Julian shook his head.
"No."
"Then why?"
"I was angry."
I stared at him.
"About what?"
He looked at me.
"You told me you were leaving."
I remembered the conversation before Selene arrived.
I had confronted him with hotel receipts.
I had told him I knew there was another woman.
I had said I would sleep at my father's house and speak to an attorney the next morning.
Julian had become strangely calm.
Then he asked me to stay for one final conversation.
Selene arrived with tea.
"You planned it after I said I was leaving."
Julian looked down.
"I planned to scare you."
"Two hundred lashes."
He closed his eyes.
"It went too far."
Rage moved through me so quickly that Rachel touched my elbow.
I did not raise my voice.
"It went exactly as far as you chose to take it."
"Selene kept pushing."
"You were holding the weapon."
He stopped talking.
Detective Brooks asked whether Nathan had specifically ordered the assault.
Julian shook his head.
"No."
That answer mattered.
Nathan had encouraged fear.
Julian had chosen brutality.
Selene had chosen to participate.
There would be no convenient mastermind who erased everyone else's responsibility.
"Why turn yourself in now?"
Aaron asked.
Julian laughed bitterly.
"Because Nathan won."
"That is not remorse."
"I know."
"Try again."
Julian looked at me.
"Because I finally understood what it feels like to discover someone built your life around a lie."
I stared at him.
"Do not compare us."
"I am not."
"You had choices."
"So did you."
The words escaped before he could stop them.
The room changed.
There was the old Julian again.
His attorney whispered urgently.
Julian shook his head.
"No."
He looked at me.
"You could have left me years ago."
I felt something in me become very calm.
"That is what you still do not understand."
"What?"
"You spent years making sure leaving felt impossible."
"Then you used the fact that I stayed as proof I chose everything that happened after."
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
I stood.
"Give them every recording."
"Elena."
"Give them every account, every password, every message."
"And maybe prosecutors will consider that when they decide what to do with you."
His face tightened.
"You will not ask for mercy?"
"No."
"After everything we had?"
I looked at him for the last time that night.
"After everything you took."
I left the room.
My father was not waiting outside.
For the first time since the call, he could not come when I needed him.
Federal investigators had been interviewing him for three hours about the 2009 disclosure delay.
At two thirty in the morning, Rachel received an update.
Victor had not been charged.
But the regulators were opening a formal investigation.
He had agreed to step aside temporarily from Blackwood Capital while it proceeded.
My father had lost his chair before Nathan did.
The irony was not lost on anyone.
At three ten, Westbridge's counsel called.
Nathan had filed an emergency lawsuit challenging my call right.
At four, a judge issued a temporary order freezing major asset transfers but leaving operational control with me until a hearing.
At five, Nathan sent me a private message.
YOU CAN KEEP WESTBRIDGE.
I stared at it.
Another line appeared.
I WANT ONE THING.
I typed back.
WHAT?
His response came ten seconds later.
THE ORIGINAL AGREEMENT.
I looked at Rachel.
"He wants to destroy the last copy."
"Probably."
A second message appeared.
GIVE IT TO ME AND I RETURN THE 412 MILLION.
Then another.
I ALSO GIVE YOU THE FILE THAT CLEARS YOUR FATHER.
I did not answer.
Nathan sent one final message.
COME WITHOUT POLICE OR JULIAN.
I smiled for the first time all night.
Nathan still believed I needed to choose between secrecy and power.
He still believed I would protect my father at any price.
He still believed he understood what I wanted.
That was the first real mistake he had made.
I forwarded the message to Detective Brooks.
"I think he wants a meeting."
She read it.
"Do you want to give him one?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
I looked back toward the interview room where Julian was still talking.
"Because Nathan built this entire scheme by making people believe they were alone with their secrets."
May you like
I turned to her.
"I want him to believe it one more time."
