Chapter 11 - The Woman Who Borrowed Valeria'S Face

The hotel corridor smelled like citrus cleaner and expensive perfume.

Valeria stood beside Ana and watched security footage on a laptop in the manager's office.

She had insisted on coming.

Ernesto had argued for exactly four minutes before realizing she would come anyway.

The footage showed Ofelia entering the hotel at 9:18 the night before the birthday party.

She wore a white jacket and carried the same black leather handbag she had brought to court.

At 9:23, Héctor Vela entered through the garage.

At 9:41, Mauricio Rivas arrived wearing a baseball cap and glasses.

At 10:07, a fourth person appeared.

Valeria leaned toward the screen.

The woman had dark hair.

She wore a loose beige dress.

She was close to Valeria's height.

From a distance, the resemblance was disturbing.

Not exact.

Enough.

The woman kept her face down as she crossed the lobby.

At the elevator, she lifted her head for three seconds.

Valeria felt every muscle in her body tighten.

"That is the woman from Rafael's video."

Ana paused the footage.

"I agree."

The hotel manager enlarged the image.

The face became grainy but clearer.

The woman had a narrower jaw than Valeria.

Her nose was slightly different.

Her eyes were not the same shape.

But with Valeria's hairstyle, makeup, and clothing, the resemblance could fool a person who expected to see Valeria.

"Do you recognize her?" an investigator asked.

Valeria shook her head.

The manager checked the room's key history.

The second guest key had been issued using a digital registration under Valeria's name.

The identity document attached to the registration was a real scan of Valeria's passport.

The photograph had been digitally replaced.

The signature looked like hers.

The phone number belonged to a prepaid account.

The email address was nearly identical to Valeria's private address, except for one missing letter.

Someone had built a version of her from pieces.

"When did they get my passport scan?"

Ana looked at her.

"Do you remember the last time Julián handled your passport?"

Valeria did.

Six months earlier, he planned a weekend trip to Los Cabos.

He insisted on keeping both passports in his briefcase.

The trip was canceled the morning they were supposed to leave.

He blamed a business emergency.

Valeria had not seen her passport again until two weeks later.

"Six months."

The investigator wrote it down.

"That may be when the copy was made."

They viewed the hallway footage from the ninth floor.

At 10:09, the woman entered Room 914.

At 10:16, Ofelia arrived carrying a garment bag.

At 10:22, Héctor entered with a small equipment case.

At 10:31, Mauricio arrived.

All four remained inside for nearly ninety minutes.

At 11:58, the woman left wearing an emerald blouse that looked almost identical to one in Valeria's closet.

Valeria touched her sleeve unconsciously.

"She dressed like me."

Ana nodded.

"They were rehearsing."

The word was worse than impersonating.

Rehearsing meant preparation.

Multiple attempts.

Adjustments.

Someone studying how Valeria moved and spoke.

The investigator requested a list of food and service deliveries to the room.

The hotel had sent a mirror, ring light, and garment steamer upstairs at Ofelia's request.

Héctor had brought his own tripod.

Mauricio requested access to the business center printer at 11:02.

The print log showed seventeen pages.

The hotel no longer had the contents.

But the file name remained in the system.

VS_AUTH_FINAL_3.pdf.

Valeria stared at it.

"Final three."

Ana nodded.

"Meaning there were at least two earlier versions."

The investigator asked whether the hotel could identify the woman using exterior cameras.

They followed her backward through footage from the garage.

She arrived in a compact blue car registered to Mariana Solís.

The name produced an address in Zapopan and a small public social profile.

Mariana worked as a freelance promotional model and actor.

Her profile contained photographs from trade shows, commercials, and private events.

In several images, she wore wigs and character makeup.

Valeria felt nauseated.

"They hired an actress."

"It appears possible," Ana said.

The investigators went to Mariana's registered address.

She was not there.

Her landlord said she had left that morning with two suitcases.

She told him she had booked a long job in Monterrey.

Her phone went straight to voicemail.

But she had made one mistake.

She paid her rent through a banking app that preserved a destination account.

Investigators obtained legal process for transaction details.

At 5:40 p.m., the first result arrived.

Three weeks earlier, Mariana received 120,000 pesos from Vela Risk Solutions.

Two days later, she received 80,000 more from a consulting account linked to Mauricio's executive assistant.

The payment description read MEDIA TRAINING.

Valeria laughed when she saw it.

It was not amusement.

It was disbelief reaching its limit.

"Media training."

Ana watched her carefully.

"You can be angry."

"I am past angry."

"There is no past angry."

Valeria looked at her.

"Then I am somewhere ugly inside it."

At 6:15, investigators located Mariana's car at the airport.

Her name did not appear on any passenger list.

A terminal camera showed her entering with two suitcases.

Another showed her leaving twenty minutes later through a different door without them.

A man had taken the luggage.

Mariana left in a taxi.

The taxi record led to a bus terminal.

By 8:00, they knew she had purchased a ticket under her real name.

The destination was not Monterrey.

It was León.

Local authorities were contacted.

At 10:12, Mariana was located at a small hotel near the bus station.

She did not run.

She did not deny her identity.

She started crying before investigators finished introducing themselves.

Valeria did not attend the first interview.

She waited with Ana in another room while a video feed showed the table.

Mariana looked younger than she had on social media.

Twenty-nine.

Maybe thirty.

Her hands shook constantly.

"I did not know they were stealing anything," she said.

The investigator remained neutral.

"What did you believe you were doing?"

"A private reenactment."

"Of what?"

"A client verification video."

"Whose identity were you told to use?"

Mariana looked down.

"Valeria Salgado."

Valeria's throat tightened.

"Who hired you?"

"Héctor."

"Did he tell you why?"

"He said the real client had anxiety on camera and needed a body double for internal training."

The investigator slid a photograph of Ofelia across the table.

"Did you meet this woman?"

Mariana nodded.

"She did my makeup."

Valeria closed her eyes.

Ofelia had touched another woman's face and tried to turn it into hers.

"Did you meet Julián Castañeda?"

Mariana hesitated.

That pause mattered.

"Yes."

"Where?"

"At Héctor's office."

"How many times?"

"Three."

"What did he do?"

Mariana rubbed her hands together.

"He coached me."

Valeria leaned forward.

The investigator asked, "Coached you how?"

"How Valeria talks."

The room around Valeria disappeared.

Mariana continued.

"He gave me recordings."

"Of what?"

"Phone calls."

"Private calls?"

"I do not know."

"What did he tell you to copy?"

"Her pauses."

Mariana swallowed.

"Her accent."

Another pause.

"The way she says yes when she is nervous."

Valeria's eyes filled before she could stop them.

That detail was intimate in a way the financial theft was not.

Julián had studied the sound of her fear.

Then taught it to a stranger.

Ana placed a hand flat on the table between them, close enough to be present but not touching.

Valeria breathed through her nose.

On the screen, Mariana began crying harder.

"I thought it was weird."

"Why did you continue?"

"They paid me."

"How much total?"

"Two hundred thousand."

"Did they ask you to sign anything?"

"Yes."

"With whose name?"

Mariana covered her face.

"Valeria's."

The investigator waited.

"Did Julián watch you practice?"

"Yes."

"Did Ofelia?"

"Yes."

"Did Mauricio?"

"Once."

"Did anyone ever say the purpose was banking?"

Mariana hesitated again.

"Mauricio said the bank's system would only need a clean match once."

Ana immediately wrote the phrase down.

"A clean match once."

That sentence connected the impersonation to the biometric process.

Mariana reached into her purse.

The investigator told her to stop until the item could be identified.

She slowly removed a small flash drive.

"Héctor gave me this to practice."

"What is on it?"

"Videos of Valeria."

Valeria could no longer remain in the observation room.

She walked into the hallway.

Ernesto was waiting there.

He had arrived during the interview and remained outside because investigators did not want his presence affecting Mariana's statement.

Valeria looked at him.

"He taught her how I sound when I am afraid."

Ernesto's face broke.

He opened his arms.

This time Valeria stepped into them.

She cried against his shoulder for less than a minute.

Then she pulled away.

"I want the drive examined."

"It will be."

"I want every video cataloged."

"It will be."

"And I want to know how Mauricio made the bank accept any of this."

Ernesto nodded.

"Then we follow the system."

The answer came faster than they expected.

At 11:48 p.m., Banco Horizonte's internal security director called Ana.

He sounded panicked.

An emergency audit had discovered that the transfer did not pass through the normal biometric system at all.

A senior executive override had been used.

The override bypassed one of the standard identity checks.

Only six people at the bank had that authority.

Mauricio Rivas was one of them.

Valeria felt a sharp relief.

"Then he is finished."

Ana did not answer.

The security director continued speaking over the phone.

Then Ana's face changed.

"When did you discover that?"

A pause.

"And where is Rivas now?"

Another pause.

Ana closed her eyes.

"Lock his office and preserve every device."

She ended the call.

Valeria already knew the answer was bad.

"He is gone?"

Ana nodded.

"Mauricio left the bank at 4:36 this afternoon."

"Where did he go?"

"Nobody knows."

"What about his computer?"

Ana looked at Ernesto.

"His executive drive was remotely wiped at 7:02."

Ernesto's expression became cold.

"From where?"

"The bank is tracing it."

May you like

Ana looked back at Valeria.

"But the wipe request came from an administrator account assigned to someone who was inside the birthday party yesterday."
