Chapter 10 - The Birthday Video

By sunrise, the case had become two cases.

One involved Valeria.

The other involved Ernesto.

Mauricio Rivas claimed Ernesto had used his reputation and former government contacts to pressure Rafael into falsely implicating Banco Horizonte.

He claimed Ernesto was trying to hide his own role in moving trust money.

He claimed the birthday investigation had been manipulated from the beginning.

The accusations were almost elegant in their design.

Every step Ernesto took to help Valeria could be recast as interference.

Every witness who spoke against Julián could be described as pressured.

Every forged document in Ernesto's name could be presented as evidence against him before the forgery was proven.

Valeria finally understood Plan B.

If the financial transfer succeeded, they took the money.

If it failed, they buried the investigation beneath competing accusations.

Confusion was the backup plan.

Ernesto sat at the kitchen table in the protected apartment, reading Mauricio's complaint.

"He learned from good lawyers."

Valeria stared at him.

"You sound impressed."

"I respect dangerous tactics enough to identify them."

"Can they charge you?"

"Anyone can be investigated."

"That was not my question."

"They can investigate the accusation."

"And suspend you from what?"

Ernesto almost smiled.

"Retirement?"

"Dad."

His smile faded.

"The larger danger is credibility."

"Yours?"

"Yours too."

Valeria hated that he was right.

If the public believed Ernesto orchestrated everything for financial reasons, Julián's defense would gain exactly what it needed.

Doubt.

Not proof of innocence.

Just enough doubt to make every fact look like part of a family feud.

Ana arrived with Tomás, the mariachi bandleader.

He held his phone like it was suddenly worth more than his trumpet.

"I brought the original recording."

The investigators had already copied the clip from the party.

But Tomás had something else.

"The camera was running longer than I remembered."

Valeria looked up.

"How long?"

"Twenty-seven minutes."

The recording began before Ernesto arrived.

That changed everything.

The first minutes showed guests laughing around the kitchen.

Ofelia adjusted balloons.

Julián poured tequila.

Valeria carried plates.

At first, nothing seemed important.

Then Ana paused the video.

"Back up ten seconds."

Tomás did.

Ofelia was speaking quietly to Julián near the cake.

The mariachi music made the audio difficult.

A technician cleaned the sound enough to isolate part of the conversation.

Ofelia's voice became audible.

"It should already be moving."

Julián glanced at his watch.

"Mauricio said twelve-ten."

Valeria felt her pulse jump.

The transfer began at 12:11.

Ana leaned closer.

The video continued.

Ofelia said, "Keep her busy until twelve-fifteen."

Julián replied, "She will be cutting cake."

Tomás stopped the video.

Nobody spoke.

Valeria looked at Ana.

"That is it."

Ana nodded.

"That is very important."

The clip continued.

At 12:08, Julián handed Valeria a stack of dessert plates and told her to reorganize them.

At 12:09, Ofelia complained that the candles were crooked and made Valeria replace them.

At 12:10, Julián moved her handbag from the counter to a cabinet.

At 12:11, he began the birthday toast.

At 12:12, he made the statement about hitting her.

At 12:13, Ofelia interrupted to insist on photographs.

At 12:14, Valeria stood in the center of the room while guests sang.

At 12:15, Julián checked his watch and smiled at his mother.

The entire party choreography suddenly had a financial clock beneath it.

Tomás looked sick.

"We were helping them."

Valeria shook her head.

"You did not know."

"We kept singing while they were moving money."

"And your camera kept recording."

Tomás looked at her.

"That matters?"

"More than the singing."

They kept watching.

At 12:17, Ernesto entered.

The room fell silent.

The confrontation unfolded exactly as Valeria remembered.

Then came a detail no one had noticed in real time.

When Ernesto asked who hurt Valeria, Julián looked at Ofelia before answering.

Ofelia gave the smallest nod.

Then Julián said, "I did."

Ana replayed the moment.

"Why would she signal him?"

Ernesto leaned closer.

"Because she wanted him to perform confidence."

Valeria thought about it.

The insult had not been spontaneous.

It had been part of the humiliation.

Ofelia had expected Ernesto to back down or become emotional.

She wanted Julián to look dominant in front of the room.

Instead, the admission became evidence.

The plan failed because they underestimated Ernesto's response.

The video continued.

When Ernesto told Valeria to go to the garden, Ofelia whispered something to Julián.

The audio technician amplified it.

"Check the bag."

Julián's eyes moved toward the recycling area.

Then the study door opened and investigators entered.

Ofelia ran for the black trash bag.

The entire sequence was captured.

Ricardo had asked whether the admission was recorded.

Now investigators had much more than that.

They had evidence suggesting the party itself had been coordinated around the transfer time.

Ernesto sat back.

"Mauricio's complaint just became more dangerous for him."

Valeria looked at him.

"Why?"

"Because he claims I invented the financial connection after the raid."

Ernesto pointed at the screen.

"This video places his name inside their conversation before I entered the house."

Ana nodded.

"And before anyone at the party knew investigators were present."

Tomás swallowed.

"Do you need me to testify?"

Ana looked at him.

"Probably."

He nodded slowly.

"Then I will."

Valeria stared at the frozen image on screen.

Ofelia whispering.

Julián checking his watch.

Her own back turned as she carried plates.

She had been inches away from the people planning to take her money.

She had smiled when they told her to smile.

She had thanked them for the party.

The humiliation had been worse than she knew.

Then Tomás spoke again.

"There is another recording."

Everyone turned toward him.

"What other recording?"

"One of my musicians started a live stream from the garden before we came inside."

Ana stood.

"Is it saved?"

"I think so."

They called the musician, Diego.

He arrived an hour later.

The live stream was still archived on a private social account.

It began outside the house at 11:46.

For twelve minutes, it showed nothing but musicians tuning instruments and joking.

Then, in the background, a black SUV pulled into the service driveway.

Valeria leaned toward the screen.

A man stepped out.

Gray hair.

Glasses.

Héctor Vela.

He walked toward the side entrance carrying a briefcase.

At 11:51, Ofelia came outside.

They spoke for less than a minute.

Then Ofelia took the briefcase inside.

Héctor left.

Ernesto's face hardened.

"The birthday window started before noon."

Ana froze the frame.

The license plate on the SUV was visible.

Investigators ran it.

The vehicle belonged to Vela Risk Solutions.

The same company that made small deposits into the forged account under Ernesto's name.

The connection was no longer theoretical.

Héctor was physically at the house before the transfer.

The investigators requested an immediate search for him.

At 1:30 p.m., a traffic camera located the SUV near the airport.

At 2:05, it was found abandoned in a parking garage.

The suitcase was gone.

The archive boxes were gone.

Héctor was gone.

But one item remained beneath the driver's seat.

A hotel key card.

The hotel was downtown.

Investigators obtained room records.

The room had been rented for three nights.

Not in Héctor's name.

Not in Julián's.

Not in Mauricio's.

The reservation belonged to Ofelia Salgado Castañeda.

Valeria stared at the name.

"She used Salgado?"

Ana frowned.

"That is your father's surname."

Ernesto went still.

Ofelia had never used it.

Then the investigator pulled the registration copy.

The identification attached to the hotel reservation showed Ofelia's photograph.

But the name was different.

Ofelia Salgado Castañeda.

And the tax number beneath it belonged to Ernesto.

Valeria felt the scheme widen again.

They were not merely forging signatures anymore.

They were constructing identities.

Then the investigator read the hotel notes.

"There were two registered guests."

"Who was the second?" Ana asked.

May you like

The investigator looked at Valeria.

"A woman checked in under your name."
