Chapter 2 — The Man Who Owned Nothing

Chapter 2 — The Man Who Owned Nothing
Marcus awoke the next morning expecting room service.
Instead, his presidential suite keycard flashed red.
Access Denied.
He frowned.
"There must be some mistake."
The elevator refused his executive access.
His company credit card declined.
His private parking privileges vanished.
Then came the phone call.
"This is Daniel Brooks from the Board."
Marcus smiled.
"I assume you've sorted out last night's confusion."
Daniel's voice remained calm.
"There is no confusion."
A long pause.
"You were removed as Chief Executive Officer at 11:43 last night."
Marcus laughed.
"Impossible."
"The ownership documents have been activated."
"I own this company."
"No, Marcus."
Another pause.
"You never did."
The line went dead.
For the first time in years...
Marcus felt fear.
Real fear.
He rushed downstairs only to find dozens of employees avoiding eye contact.
Some looked sympathetic.
Others looked relieved.
Then he saw Isabella.
She stood calmly in the lobby wearing a simple navy business suit.
Every department manager stood behind her.
One by one...
They greeted her.
"Good morning, Ms. Sinclair."
Not Mrs. Hale.
Not Mrs. Marcus.
May you like
Ms. Sinclair.
The woman they had truly worked for all along.
