Chapter 1 — The Midnight Coup

Marcus didn't even notice the first sign.

While he poured champagne for Vanessa inside the presidential suite, every executive in the company was reading the same message.

Emergency Board Meeting. Attendance Mandatory. Effective Immediately.

His Chief Financial Officer tried calling him three times.

Marcus ignored every call.

"I'm celebrating," he laughed, wrapping an arm around Vanessa. "Whatever it is can wait until morning."

It couldn't.

Across the city, Isabella's father, Arthur Sinclair, sat quietly at the head of a polished mahogany conference table. Around him were the company's oldest directors—people Marcus believed answered to him.

They never had.

Arthur slid one thick leather folder across the table.

"Eleven years ago," he began, "my daughter asked us to let Marcus believe he built this company himself."

The room remained silent.

"She believed love mattered more than power."

Another folder followed.

"Tonight, he proved she was wrong."

The corporate attorney opened the documents.

Every trademark...

Every hotel...

Every international holding company...

Every piece of valuable real estate...

All traced back to the Sinclair Family Trust.

Marcus had never owned the empire.

He had merely been hired to manage it.

Arthur signed one page.

Then another.

"Terminate Marcus Hale as CEO."

The motion passed unanimously.

At exactly 11:43 p.m., Marcus officially became an employee without a company.

He simply hadn't learned it yet.
