Chapter 19 - The Story He Could Not Hold

Nolan took the stand with the same measured expression Blair remembered from charity banquets.

He spoke softly about responsibility, pressure, and his desire to protect the family.

He admitted making financial mistakes.

He denied intentionally injuring Corinne.

He described her as frightened and confused.

And he insisted the iron rod had been in the house before he arrived.

The prosecutor asked about the sealed fireplace.

Nolan said he had forgotten the renovation.

The prosecutor showed him the salvage-yard receipt.

Nolan said he had purchased the rod as a decorative item.

The prosecutor displayed the staged photograph dated six weeks before the confrontation.

Nolan paused.

“I'm not sure when that was taken.”

The prosecutor asked why the photograph had been represented to police as depicting the aftermath of Corinne's alleged attack.

Nolan looked toward his lawyer.

The courtroom was silent.

Blair sat beside her mother, hands clasped tightly in her lap.

She had imagined shouting at him.

In reality, she wanted only for the questions to continue.

Nolan offered a new explanation.

He said Eric had taken photographs as part of a remodeling discussion.

The prosecutor introduced the development company's schedule and asked about the line reading ESTABLISH AGGRESSION FIRST.

Nolan said he didn't recognize the phrase.

The digital examiner's authentication findings had already been presented, along with records linking the file to his account.

His answers grew less smooth.

For the first time, Blair saw Nolan without the protection of a room arranged to admire him.

He was not a master strategist.

He was a man attempting to maintain contradictory stories under sustained scrutiny.

The hearing did not end in a cinematic confession.

It ended with the judge setting the case for trial and reaffirming the conditions intended to protect witnesses.

Outside, reporters approached Blair.

She declined comment on the evidence.

Corinne stopped beside her.

“I'd like to say one thing,” she told Camille.

Camille reminded her to keep it brief.

Corinne faced the microphones.

“I don't need people to think I'm perfect,” she said.

“I need them to stop assuming my age makes somebody else's story more believable than mine.”

Then she walked to the car.

Blair followed, proud of the steadiness in her steps.

That night a prosecutor called with an update about plea discussions.

Nolan's lawyers were reconsidering their position.

But there was one condition Blair did not expect.

Nolan wanted to apologize to Corinne face-to-face.
